People Who Are Like Popcorn

Matthew To Revelation
Object: a bowl or bag of popcorn
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought along with me one of my very favorite snacks today. How many of you like popcorn? (let them answer) Don't you love to sit down at night and munch on some hot popcorn while you are watching television or working a puzzle? (let them answer) Popcorn is one of my all--time favorites.
I also like to watch popcorn pop. You put the kernels of corn in a popper, turn it on, and watch them explode and fill the popper. It doesn't take long for them to grow and increase from a few tiny seeds to a full dish of something delicious.
The Apostle Paul knew some people in a town called Thessalonica who were like popcorn. He used to tell people all over the world about the way these people grew in their love for one another. That meant that being a Christian was a very important thing to them and, because they trusted God, they also loved each other more and more. They were like popcorn.
They were not made any different from other people. They looked like you and me. They wore clothes and ate food and slept when they were tired and worked and went to school. They were people like you and me. But they trusted God. Paul promised them that if they trusted God more and more to help them live, they would find more love for each other. The people believed what Paul said, and they began to trust God a little more each day. They trusted God for their food, for their homes, and for their clothes. They trusted God to help them raise their children and to give them the right answers. They began to give some of their money that they had worked hard for to help other people who were sick or could not work. They did what God told them to do, and they trusted him with their whole lives. This really worked. Pretty soon they found other things to do for each other, and instead of fighting or arguing with people, they were loving each other more and more. It was a good place to live. Christians grew like popcorn and their love grew even faster.
That is the way God wants you and me to be. He wants us to live with trust in him and in love for one another. You could grow in love toward God like popcorn if you tried. I hope you trust God to help you to live your life and to love everyone that you know. That will be wonderful.
The next time you see some popcorn, remember the people in Thessalonica and how they grew when they trusted God and loved one another.
