Messages For Children On Lent And Easter Themes
There once was a mean dwarf who pushed and shoved, grabbed, and was always first in line. But what was worst of all, he made sandwiches that put people to sleep. One day, when all the children were lined up to wash their hands for snack, the mean dwarf ran in front of all of them, unwilling to wait to take his turn. One of the children said, "That's not fair!" and did not want to play with the mean dwarf.
One of the children cried, "Look, Teacher, he's not taking turns," and he no longer wanted to play with the mean dwarf. But one of the children said, "I have an idea." He invited the mean dwarf to a picnic. Putting the tablecloth on the table, he took out sandwiches to eat and chocolate milk to drink. Of course the mean dwarf had brought his sandwiches to put the boy to sleep. "Here, have one of mine," said the dwarf. The boy shook his head, "No, you have one of mine first." The mean dwarf took the sandwich the boy offered, ate it, and fell asleep, for the boy had given the mean dwarf one of his own sandwiches. Then the boy covered the dwarf with a blanket and enjoyed the rest of the picnic at the table with his friends.
Jesus' last meal with his friends was at the table that pointed to God and to giving his life on the cross, a time when mean dwarfs and death were conquered.
Talk together: What do you think the dwarf learned? Why do you think Jesus ate his last meal at a "pointing table"? To what did it point?
Prayer: God, be with us in our eating and our sleeping, and help us be aware of your loving presence and will among us. Amen.
