Praise Is Due To You, O God, In Zion
Devotional
Companion to the Psalter
A Devotional Guide to the Psalms
Object:
Praise is due to you, O God, in Zion ...
O you who answer prayer!
To you all flesh shall come ...
You visit the earth and water it,
you greatly enrich it ...
you provide the people with grain ...
You crown the year with your bounty.
The pastures of the wilderness overflow,
the hills gird themselves with joy
-- Psalm 65:1a, 2, 9, 11
Theme: Thanksgiving for a great harvest
Outline
1-2 -- God be praised in Zion and by all humankind.
3-4 -- For forgiving our sins and welcoming us in your temple,
5 -- for your goodness and past deliverances,
6-8 -- for sustaining and controlling the forces of nature, and
9-13 -- for the gift of a bountiful harvest. Even the meadows, hills, and valleys sing for joy!
Notes
• Praise -- Creation/History
• Picture the worshiping congregation gathered in the temple at the presentation of the firstfruits at the Passover (vv. 9-13). (See Leviticus 23:10-14.)
For Reflection
• This is a beautiful, exuberant poem of praise for a great harvest. Even the earth rejoices! Thus, the faithful had a reverence for the earth, sensing a good relationship, something many of the modern generation do not share. There has been a ruthless exploiting of its value with little thought for its renewal. Worse yet, there is an easy-going acceptance of poverty and hunger in our midst and in many places of the earth.
• Can we work and give and pray for a change of attitude? Whatever our political loyalties, should we not all be environmentalists like the psalmists and the apostles were? (See Romans 8:19-23.)
Prayer
Dear God, you have created a marvelous earth on which we dwell. Your lavish generosity is seen in its beauty and its rich provision sufficient for everyone. Forgive us for indifference toward the poor and hungry of the world. Make us generous toward them with gifts and prayers that those who live at earth's farthest bounds may be fed, cheered by your love, and rejoice in you with us, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
