Mildred: an elderly lady who is handicapped
Lucy: a young volunteer with an attitude
(As the lights come up, Mildred is seated in a chair, knitting. Her walker is close beside her. There is a knock at the door)
Mildred: It's open. Come on in.
Lucy: Mildred, you are supposed to wait until I call out the name of the company. You know the policy. Don't just tell anyone to come in. Hey, you didn't know it was me. It could have been a robber or a thief.
Mildred: Well, they probably would have just come right in without waiting for an invite.
Lucy: How many times have you been told to ask who it is first?
Mildred: More times that I can count. (Exasperatedly) I'll try to do better the next time you come over.
Lucy: (Patronizingly) Should I go back out and knock again so you can practice?
Mildred: No, dear, I think I can handle it.
Lucy: Well, all right, if you're sure?
Mildred: I'm sure. It's my feet that don't work, not my brain.
Lucy: Well, here is your lunch.
Mildred: Thank you, dear. (Starts to eat)
Lucy: (Sits. There is a long pause while Lucy tries to think of something to say) I guess I don't know anything new.
Mildred: You don't need to stay, Lucy. I'm sure you'd rather be doing other things.
Lucy: No, it's okay. I'm supposed to put some time in at each house. (Notices a list written on a sheet of paper sticking out of the Bible) Hey, this has my name written on it. Were you going to report me or something?
Mildred: No, I wasn't going to report you. Why don't you go ahead and pull the list out and see what it says by your name.
Lucy: It says, "Take away the hurt." (Defensively) What's that supposed to mean?
Mildred: It means that I wish whatever is upsetting you would go away.
Lucy: I never said I was upset.
Mildred: No, you didn't. Maybe it was just my imagination that something was bothering you.
Lucy: (Reluctantly) No, it wasn't your imagination.
Mildred: Do you want me to stop praying for you?
Lucy: Is that what this whole list is?
Mildred: Yes, people that I know or have heard about that need prayers.
Lucy: I didn't ask you to pray for me.
Mildred: No, you didn't. I wanted to pray for you.
Lucy: Why? We don't even get along all that well.
Mildred: It's something I can still do that's useful.
Lucy: It's weird. You hardly know me and you're praying for me. Why don't you do something else?
Mildred: Because I'm not like you. I can't go around house to house to take meals or serve someone in need. I just sit here all day, bored to tears.
Lucy: Yeah, well, I better get going.
Mildred: Heavens, yes, you wouldn't want to stay a minute over your required time.
Lucy: You know, I don't do this because I want to.
Mildred: Nobody's forcing you.
Lucy: Yeah, they are. I have to do so many hours of community service.
Mildred: Why?
Lucy: Mind your own business. (Starts to leave, then stops) My girlfriend got caught stealing.
Mildred: But you weren't doing anything wrong?
Lucy: No, I wasn't. I asked her to put the shirt back and she told me she did.
Mildred: But she didn't?
Lucy: No, she didn't. It's all her fault I have to do this stuff. She jerked me around.
Mildred: I'm sorry. I guess being lied to hurt.
Lucy: Whatever.
Mildred: See you tomorrow?
Lucy: Yeah. (Leaves. After a moment she knocks)
Mildred: Who is it?
Lucy: (Comes back into the room) You remembered!
Mildred: Like it did me any good. You just walked right on in.
Lucy: Yeah, you're right.
Mildred: So, what did you come back for?
Lucy: Never mind. (Starts to leave, then hesitates) Will you keep praying for me?
Mildred: Of course.
