Prayers for the Age of Technology

Dear Loving Communicator:
We feel especially blessed by the changes which are occurring in transportation and communication. They have suddenly transformed our big world into a small neighborhood. New relationships and new styles of life are being developed; in some sense, they are being forced upon us.
We are fascinated by the promising potentials in what is occurring: better distribution of resources; better communication and increased understanding between peoples; more cooperation; and enrichment of life through sharing among newfound neighbors of treasured spiritual and cultural resources.
Many roadblocks, however, stand in the way of realization of these potentials. Obviously, we do not know how to live together in the new intimacy. Greed, prejudice, nationalism, and ethnic narrowness are among the prominent barriers. Transportation is being prostituted to greed and hoarding, rather than to uninhibited distribution. Communication, all too frequently, serves the purposes of propaganda, deception, and expressions of ill will.
Teach us how better to use these marvelous resources, how better to cooperate, and to express mutual respect and loving concern.
Motivate us to seek knowledge of you, your spirit and will, with the same energy and earnestness that characterize the scientific and technological quest. Amen.
