Prayer 35
Worship
Prayers for the Age of Technology
Object:
Dear Infinitely Patient One:
Forgive us for what we have been, and what we still are, despite all your investment in us.
We marvel at your patience with us. You stood by us in the long ages of our primitivism and savage tribalism. When you thought we were mature enough to understand, you gave us Jesus to show us your hopes for us. Now you have entrusted to us the tools of science to enter many secrets of your creation; given us a larger measure of freedom and self-confidence; expanded the horizons of our reasoning.
How can you continue to trust us after the shambles we have made of the gifts of your grace? We killed Jesus. We have prostituted so many of the benefits of science to exploitation and injustice. Our reason has led us into dark forests of doubt.
Even we can see that, despite our haughty pride and veneer of civilization, we are still the same old savages we always have been. We are specializing in the creation of alienation, insecurity, and injustice. We are increasingly turning our faces from you to hedonism and secular concerns. We are saturating the earth with more and more blood spilled in violence.
Dear Source of Our Creation, and Sustainer of Our Continued Existence, do not lose patience with us. We know you have ample reason to do so, but we humbly pray for your continued mercy and grace. Let your boundless love continue to embrace us and teach us the lessons of love.
In the name of Jesus, Amen.
