The Promise Of The Holy Spirit

Lectionary Worship Aids
Series VI, Cycle B
Call To Worship
We seek God's kingdom. It is right that we should come together to worship God, our creator, sustainer, and hope; but do not tarry too long gazing into the heavens with anticipation. We are called to receive the power of the Holy Spirit and then to bear witness to that heavenly kingdom which is available beginning now.
Come, let us prepare ourselves as disciples of our Lord and Savior.
Collect
O God, we join the cries that have come down through the ages asking: "When, Lord, will your kingdom come?" We realize it is not for us to know, but we thank you for the promise that you do not leave us alone, you are with us, and your Spirit will empower us as we work for your kingdom. For this we are grateful. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
As we wait impatiently for a future kingdom, remind us again, Lord, that Jesus taught us the kingdom of God is within us. Open our hearts to let you rule our lives that we may show forth your love, and thus lead others into that glorious realm where you reign. Amen.
Hymns
"The Voice Of God Is Calling"
"Jesus, Thine All-Victorious Love"
Ascension Of Our Lord
Second Lesson: Ephesians 1:15-23
Theme: Christ Set Free To Be The Head Of The Church Universal
Call To Worship
Leader: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them up unto the Lord.
Leader: Let us worship and give thanks unto him.
People: He is the way, the truth, and the life, both now and forever.
Collect
O God, on this day when we mark the Ascension of our Lord, we give you thanks for Jesus's life on earth and also for his ascension into glory where he is now free to be with all his followers everywhere and at all times. Help us in this time of worship to become more keenly aware of what it means for him to be the Head of the Church Universal, and for each of us as a part of that body. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord Jesus Christ, we have faith that your power working in us is the same as God used in raising you from the dead to be the living head of the church. Forgive us when we fail to use that power to further your kingdom, and to be your body in the world by showing forth your love. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Hymns
"Open My Eyes, That I May See"
"All My Hope Is Firmly Grounded"
Ascension Of Our Lord
Gospel Lesson: Luke 24:44-53
Theme: Jesus' Departure Brought Joy
Call To Worship
Leader: Worship the Lord with joy; come before him with happy songs.
People: We acknowledge that the Lord is God. He made us and we belong to him.
Leader: Enter the Temple gates with thanksgiving, and its courts with praise.
People: We give thanks to him and praise him.
Leader: The Lord is good; his love is eternal.
People: And his faithfulness lasts forever.
Collect
Lord, like those early disciples we rejoice at your Ascension. We give thanks constantly to God for your life among us and for your eternal presence through all ages. We await your power that will enable us to be your faithful witnesses to all peoples everywhere. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, we have taken your message of repentance and forgiveness of sins very personally, and we give you thanks for the hope and promise of new life which it brings to us. Now we understand that this message is not just for a select group, but it is to be preached to all nations. Your promise of power that will enable us to be your messengers brings us great joy. Thanks be to God. Amen.
Hymns
"Crown Him With Many Crowns"
"Hail, Thou Once Despised Jesus"
