Sermons On The Second Readings
For Sundays In Advent, Christmas, And Epiphany
This day called All Saints' developed in a manner that every university fund-raiser can appreciate. The Early Christian Church wanted to honor each martyred saint with a designated day of his or her own. But in Rome and Antioch there were more known martyrs than there were days of the year. The Pope in 610 frantically moved as many bones as possible to a single building in Rome. On May 13, he renamed the building St. Mary and the Martyrs. Each year on May 13, the All Saints' Feast was held, honoring the entire group.
