Proper 10
Prayer
Prayers in Dialogue
For use with Common and Lutheran Lectionaries
Pastor:
Almighty God, we find great beauty and wonder in the world you have created; yet you have revealed to us that all we see and know will not compare to the glory you will one day reveal to those who stand in your holy presence.
Assistant: Likewise, we are puzzled and offended by the suffering we endure and which we see in the lives of those around us; yet you have declared, through your apostle, that when your glory is revealed, we will recall suffering no more.
People:
Lord God, give us a sense of awe as we view your creation. Give us trust and confidence in your power and presence as we endure suffering. But most of all, hold us unto you, that we may come into your glory forever.
Pastor:
Almighty God, we know from the experiences of living that every good effort is thwarted by the forces of apathy, confusion, and outright evil; but we also know that your good finds receptive lives in which to establish itself in order to bring forth resounding results.
Assistant: Likewise, we understand the differences which we, as people, present to you: some with childlike trust, others with smug disdain, yet others confused and uncertain, and some in outright rebellion against
People:
Lord God, we are amazed at the generosity of your working, speaking your Word to all, that although rejected or ignored in some lives, it may be heard and treasured and responded to in others; open our ears to hear you and our hearts and wills to respond to you.
(Other petitions may be included here.)
Pastor:
We live in confident trust that the word you speak is not wasted, is not sent forth in futility.
Assistant: We believe that your Word accomplishes what it says, and brings forth faith, trust, and righteousness.
People:
We hear your Word, O God, and it changes our lives: speak to us that we may live and be changed for eternal life with you.
All: Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen (Our Father ...)
