Proper 10 | Ordinary Time 15
Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle A
First Lesson: Genesis 25:19-34
Theme: Isaac and Rebekah
Call To Worship
If Isaac was forty years old when he and Rebekah married and the twins were not born until Isaac was sixty, the couple must have had tremendous staying power. As we worship today, let us remember all among us -- relatives, friends, and others -- who have struggled with or are presently trying to grow babies.
Collect
We embrace in prayer, O God, all who ache with unfulfilled hopes. Let our prayers speak daily to you about them. Through Jesus. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Our prayers go to those who want children but find having them difficult. When the twins struggled within Rebekah's womb, Rebekah's depression was even more intense than during the previous two decades. "If it is to be this way, why do I live?" she asked God. To survive, she must have felt accepted and cherished by Isaac. Like Rebekah and Isaac, dear God, we want so much and we try so hard; then when it might become possible, we are scared to death that something will go wrong. We wonder if, after all, it were a mistake. Be especially present to the Rebekahs and Isaacs of today. Amen
45A Hymns
"God Of Grace And God Of Glory" Tune: CWM RHONDDA
"If [Thou][You] But Suffer God To Guide [Thee][You]" Tune: NEUMARK [WER NUR DEN LIEBEN GOTT]

Proper 10
Sunday between July 10 and July 16 inclusive
Second Lesson: Romans 8:1-11
Theme: Root Of Life
Call To Worship
Set your mind on the Spirit. Then you will find life and peace. If Christ is in you, it makes no difference that the bodily part of you will die. Do not worry about these things. God will give you life through God's Spirit living within you.
Collect
As we learn to live and walk according to the Spirit, O God, our confidence grows that you are with us in all of life and in life after death. We rejoice in this freedom of hope through Jesus the Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We often choose, O God, to set our minds on things of the flesh. Then we end up focusing on the wrong things. We sputter about what we do not possess. We fret about possible outcomes of health problems rather than treasuring what we can do today. Encourage us to set our minds on the things of the Spirit, O God. Guide us so we might live and walk according to your Spirit. Amen.
45A Hymns
"O Praise The Gracious Power" Tune: CHRISTPRAISE RAY
"O Holy Spirit, Root Of Life" Tune: PUER NOBIS NASCITUR
"We Want To Learn To Live In Love" Tune: CANONBURY
Proper 10
Sunday between July 10 and July 16 inclusive
Gospel: Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23
Theme: Humus
Call To Worship
Wind blows away seed sown on a path. Seed has no chance to penetrate rocky ground with roots. Weeds overtake seed sown among thorns. However, humus offers seed the necessary components for germination, sustenance, and the bearing of fruit. Let us be like fertile compost so we might be well-prepared to hear, receive, and bring to fruition God's will for us on earth.
Collect
God who hears us, we would turn our ear to you. God who listens to what we have to say, we would listen with our whole selves. God who nourishes and sustains us, we would care for the truths you offer as tenderly as for a newly planted seedling. For the sake of Jesus the Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Gracious God, we rush into the lure of quick joy only to find that it fuels a superficial life. Guide us toward the establishment of solid roots so that our faith will not run out of steam. Lead us, Holy One, away from the shallow and toward the enduring qualities. In Jesus' name. Amen.
45A Hymns
"Lead On [Eternal Sovereign][O King Eternal]" Tune: LANCASHIRE
"God Be In My Head" Tune: LYTLINGTON
"Once To Every Man And Nation" Tune: EBENEZER
