Lectionary Worship Workbook, Series IV, Cycle C
Soul Motion
Object:
Zoos are no longer in people's good graces.
Religion faces the same problem.
Certain illusions about freedom plague them both.
-- Yann Martel, Life of Pi
Call To Worship
Leader: This is a good place to be this morning. The world goes on around us while we are in sanctuary. Here, together, we know that evil and good exist in our global village yet we choose to rest a while, giving our psyches and bodies a chance to be tranquil.
People: Sometimes we feel like the philosopher in the biblical essay, "Ecclesiastes," thinking that "everything is useless." We work hard and have little to show for it. The sun rises and sets; the wind blows round and round; rivers flow into the sea ... everything seems to lead to weariness! It seems that the more we know and the wiser we get, the more we have to worry about!
Leader: The philosopher, Qohelet, goes on to say that he would enjoy himself and find out what makes him happy.
People: We must find out what makes us happy, too.
Leader: Happiness is a solitary task.
People: We can encourage each other by articulating what we find along the path to happiness.
Leader: Right here, we can be honest about our questions, our doubts, and our findings.
People: In music and words, in silence and in conversation, we thank God and one another for this opportunity to be real.
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader)
Energy of the Universe -- however we spell your name, whatever we call you, however we experience your presence, we are grateful that you make your home among humankind. Thank you for the many ways you exhibit your caring for your creatures. We open our minds and bodies to your love, expecting to hear your affirmation and your guiding voice. We are your loyal people, ready to be still in your presence. Amen.
Call To Confession (Leader)
Throughout the global village this morning, people are using various nouns to describe the ceaseless creativity in the natural universe and in the human psyche. Everywhere, people are asking questions about the meaning of their lives. We have our own questions and now we make time to reflect on what is Holy, noticing the attitudes and ideas that separate us from our sisters and brothers with different descriptive words. Pray with me the printed prayer and then have your personal conversation with the Holy One.
Community Confession (Unison)
Center of the Universe -- we desperately want you to engage with us in ways we can see and understand.
We frantically search for things that satisfy us.
We try words and drugs and relationships hoping to be close to you.
But we are not happy; we are not content; we are not loyal to our friends and commitments.
Whisper hope and satisfaction to us; sing us a love song; touch us with the fiery magma of creativity and peace.
So, in this moment, we want to be free from anything that retards our journey to Holy Mystery and peaceful psyche.
Transform our priorities and our goals; reshape our relationships and professions. Amen.
Sermon Idea
Ecclesiastes works up nicely as a first person monologue/soliloquy by Philosopher Qohelet with the title something like, Life Isn't Fair. Observations about work, rest, happiness, aging, taxation, and spirituality can be made with some subtle humor. She/he could "rant" and reflect in the center aisle of the sanctuary.
Hosea 11, preceded by reference to 11:12--12:1, could be a poignant reflection on the political situation of Israel and Palestine rooted in the spiritual hopes of the ages.
A red flag for both texts: The writers present what today appear as cynical and masculine/patriarchal views; the preacher will have to be skillful in not violating the sensitivities of younger women and men in the congregation.
As in the story of Mary and Martha, Jesus resists taking on the role of conflict manager. He tells the parable of the man who didn't recognize "enough" but he refuses to invade the boundaries of the brother-brother discussion. It might be interesting to explore some of the global issues that create national and international conflict like: the USA and immigration, big houses and vanishing food-producing land, water and irrigation, corn production for ethanol, and more. A title for the gospel emphasis might be True Life and Real Things or Real Life and True Things.
Contemporary Affirmation (Unison)
We know God, the Creator, by many names;
we believe that God, the Holy One, loves us and all creation.
We know Jesus of Nazareth taught people to love friends and enemies;
we believe Jesus' teachings lead us to satisfaction in living.
We believe the Holy Spirit is moving throughout the global village,
inviting all peoples to live peaceably together;
we experience the Holy Spirit to be motivating us to journey toward
internal contentment and external service for justice.
In community, we are stimulated intellectually to ask questions
about the meaning of life and Mystery.
We are challenged to know ourselves and to relate to God.
We are soothed during the painful parts of life and in good times,
we share our rejoicings! Hurrah! Yippee! Hallelujah!
Offertory Statement (Leader)
We know that Quohelet saw the world as unfulfilling and God as non-helpful, yet he continued to be active in his community. We too may be struggling to remain faithful to Jesus' teachings, but we can stay engaged with each other, articulating our questions and learning to be tolerant of the ambiguities. We need this sanctuary, this place of holy quietness, to ask, listen, and respond to the Spirit. Give what you can to maintain this building, to minister to the neighborhood, and to reach out beyond our city.
Doxology
The Lone, Wild Bird (v. 2, modified), tune: PROSPECT
The ends of earth are in God's hand, The sea's dark deep and far-off land.
And I am yours! I rest in you. Great Spirit, come, and rest in me.
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader)
Holy One -- we are grateful for the ways you are among us, blessing us with multiple gifts. Hear our questions and despite our doubts, use our resources and our talents to make this world a more hospitable place. Amen.
Intercessory Prayers (Leader or Readers)
Energy of the Universe -- take us into ourselves and let us find you there, giving us satisfaction with life and giving us compassion for people beyond our own skins. Throughout this day, we wish to receive stimulation from your presence in nature and companions rather than from shopping or television or computer games. We want to receive your healing and your radiance. Reveal to us whatever blocks your flow to us; we want to let it go. Let us tune in to your rhythms so we are aware of a myriad ways to enjoy living.
Desert Spirit -- brighten our interior landscapes; let us be colorful like the Grand Canyon; let us find images that open us to adventure with Great Mystery. Flow in and out of us to a world choking on obsolete symbols and perceptions of another era. Lift our faith from the ruts of paths well traveled to explore contemporary styles; help us step from the still life of the institutional church and move with vitality to the shapes and colors of new life.
Generous Spirit -- warfulness and catastrophe visit so many places and people! Sitting here in the safety of this sanctuary, we abandon the compulsion to make sense of suffering. We perceive that life works better in good and bad times when there is cooperation rather than confrontation; when food, plants, animals, and people are part of the whole planetary process. Yet people are dying in the name of freedom. Visit leaders with compassion and hospitality; work through them to alleviate hunger, disease, homelessness, and violent behaviors.
God of Thoughts -- like Qohelet and Hosea, some of us ask questions and answer them with stories to explain what is important to us. Help us not be arrogant or stubborn with our own experiences of love and grace.
Prism of Sacredness -- shine through our conversations with new descriptions of everything old; let us reflect the Divine in the ways we live with the earth and our neighbors. Help us to handle gracefully the imperfections and complexities that surround us. Let us greet each new day with insight and hopefulness. Amen.
Benediction (Leader)
Life is a journey to Mystery.
Experiment with multiple names for God;
Explore different ways to respond to the Holy Spirit.
Laugh each day and unbuild the overwhelming towers of the world.
Notice possibilities around each corner;
Make dreams and cultivate a glad heart!
Holy Spirit empowers you and me to live real life --
Peace be yours, deep peace. Amen.
