Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle A
First Lesson: Genesis 37:1-4, 12-28
Theme: Peace At Home First
Call To Worship
Leader: Look to your families, what do you see?
People: We see both dissension and cooperation.
Leader: Look to your families, what do you see?
People: We see both jealousy and adoration.
Leader: Look, what do you see?
People: We see ourselves both falling short and making valid efforts to do our best.
Leader: Come now with all the complexities of human relationships to this place of grace.
Collect
Let our dedication to peace be stronger than our need to fight, dear God. Let our sense of fairness be greater than our craving to be first. Let our appreciation of justice transcend our sense of jealous competition. O God, our guide and our savior. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We know, Gracious God, that peace begins at home. When discord bellows in the house or conflict disquiets our souls, all we do elsewhere reflects its chaos. Strengthen our courage, God, to come to terms with the turmoil in our own lives so we might better bring peace wherever we go. Amen.
49A Hymns
"God Of Grace And God Of Glory" Tune: CWM RHONDDA
"I Need Thee Every Hour" Tune: NEED
"Let There Be Peace On Earth" Tune: WORLD PEACE
Proper 14
Sunday between August 7 and August 13 inclusive
Second Lesson: Romans 10:5-15
Theme: With Heart And Voice
Call To Worship
Leader: Believe with your heart and confess with your voice.
People: Jesus is Christ. God is in charge.
Leader: Believe with your heart and confess with your voice.
People: All who call on God's name shall be saved.
All: Believe with your heart and confess with your voice. Let us praise God.
Collect
There is a song in the air, O Holy Savior. It sings a tune for you. The tune is of faith. The tune is of love. How beautiful is our song of good news. Hear the song of our hearts, O God. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We do not want someone else telling us how to believe, O God, so we hesitate to speak of our faith to others. Help us remember that we need not set bonfires when it only takes a spark to spread your love. Let the expressions on our faces, the way we are with people, and the way we behave give voice to what we believe in our hearts. In the name of Christ. Amen.
49A Hymns
"God Is Here" Tune: ABBOT'S LEIGH
"Immortal Love, Forever Full" Tune: BEATITUDO or SERENITY
"It Only Takes A Spark" Tune: PASS IT ON
Proper 14
Sunday between August 7 and August 13 inclusive
Gospel: Matthew 14:22-33
Theme: Turbulence
Call To Worship
Like the turbulence of storm waves tossing a small boat, the commotion of unexpected happenings causes an uproar of squalls in our lives. We are here to remember God's present guidance throughout the furor.
Collect
We come as Peter with deliberate faith. We come as Peter with a surprising absence of faith. Despite the human, mercurial nature of our faith, Gracious God, we also confess, "Jesus, truly you are the Son of God." Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
So often, dear God, we have faith in theory but not in reality. Help us to move beyond hypothesis and toward the practice of faith. We ask through Jesus whose extended hand invites us to move forward with him. Amen.
49A Hymns
"Guide My Feet" Tune: GUIDE MY FEET
"Who Trusts In God, A Strong Abode" Tune: BISHOPGARTH or WAS MEIN GOTT WILL
"Within The Maddening Maze Of Things" Tune: SONG 67
