Lectionary Worship Aids
Series VI, Cycle C
Theme: How Paul Became An Apostle
Call To Worship
The Almighty God, the Lord, speaks: "Giving thanks is the sacrifice that honors me, and I will surely save all who obey me."
Come, let us worship the righteous God who alone is our judge.
Collect
O Lord, we would honor you with our prayers of thanksgiving and our songs of praise. Beyond that, our Father, we know that we must truly honor you with our deeds. Bless us in this time of worship, and may your Holy Spirit abide in us so that all that we do may be acceptable in your sight. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Merciful God, when we are immersed in the everyday world, we often find it difficult to live according to the teachings of Jesus. Our anger gets the best of us. We get caught up in the quest for wealth. We are not loving to our neighbors. In so many ways we know that what we do is not acceptable in your sight. Forgive us, we pray, and through this time of worship strengthen our resolve to show by our actions that we truly love you. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
Lord, we do not present these offerings to appease you, but as a sign of our commitment to you. Bless them, we pray, and use them for the building of your kingdom. Amen.
Hymns
"Come, Christians, Join To Sing"
"What Does The Lord Require"
"O Worship The King"
Proper 14/Ordinary Time 19
Sunday between August 7 and August 13 inclusive
Second Lesson: Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16
Theme: Faith
Call To Worship
Leader: Create a pure heart in me, O God,
People: and put a new and loyal spirit in me.
Leader: Give me again the joy that comes from your salvation,
People: and make me willing to obey you.
Leader: It was faith that made Abraham obey when God called him.
People: Grant us that faith, Lord, that we may be found faithful in your sight. Amen.
Collect
Lord, may this time of worship be an occasion for the renewal of our faith. We like to think we are in control of our lives, and often we hesitate or refuse opportunities that would have us move out without knowing exactly what is in store for us. May we learn from the example of Abraham to put our trust in you, and when we hear you calling, may we be willing, yes, eager, to respond, even though we do not know what the future will bring. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Heavenly Father, forgive us for the times when you have called us to serve you and we have failed to respond. Fill us with your Holy Spirit that trusting in you we may be more adventuresome, more willing to sacrifice our own plans and ambitions, in order to serve you. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
Almighty God, use these gifts, we pray, to make your Church more venturesome. Instill it with a new spirit of service that it may truly be your servant, ministering to the needs of the world. Amen.
Hymns
"Give Me The Faith"
"Let Us Plead For Faith Alone"
"My Faith Looks Up To Thee"
Proper 14/Ordinary Time 19
Sunday between August 7 and August 13 inclusive
Gospel Lesson: Luke 12:32-40
Theme: Be Ready
Call To Worship
Leader: The Lord is coming! Are you ready?
People: We are ready for whatever comes; we are dressed for action.
Leader: There's a knock at the door. You answer and see it is a man who is hungry, a woman who is sick, a person who is lost.
People: We will open the door at once and let Christ come in!
Leader: Come, let us worship the Christ who is coming!
Collect
Lord, open our eyes that we may recognize you when you come. Open our hearts that we may respond to the needs of the world to the best of our ability. Open our lips that we may glorify you in all that we do. This we pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
O God, we get tired of waiting for you to come, and we relax our watchfulness. We know that while we are sleeping you come and we do not recognize you. You knock and we do not hear. Forgive us, we pray, and by your Holy Spirit enable us to keep alert that we may always be ready for your coming. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
Lord, we present these offerings for the work of your Church that it may always be ready to see you and serve you in meeting the needs of people all around us. Amen.
Hymns
"I Want To Walk As A Child Of The Light"
"Awake, O Sleeper"
"I Want To Be Ready"
