Lectionary Worship Aids
Series VI, Cycle B
First Lesson: 2 Samuel 18:5-9, 15, 31-33
Theme: Would That I Could Have Died In Your Place
Call To Worship
How tragic it is to lose someone you love.
The forlorn cry of the one left behind rings in our ears: "I would gladly have died in your place, my love."
Come, let us worship the God of Comfort, remembering that his only Son, Jesus Christ, died for us.
Collect
Heavenly Father, we pray for all those who have lost sons and daughters, and particularly those who died prematurely under tragic circumstances. Send the comfort of your Holy Spirit; walk with them in their sorrow as one who has gone through this suffering, and help them to find the strength to go on living. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Almighty God, in life's darkest hours we feel so all alone -- deserted by family and friends, yes, even by you, Lord. Then out of the depths we cry to you, and we wait for you. We know that our hope is in you, and that with you there is steadfast love and great power to redeem. Amen.
Hymns
"O Love Divine, What Hast Thou Done"
"How Great Thou Art"

Second Lesson: Ephesians 4:25--5:2
Theme: Characteristics Of Our New Life
Call To Worship
Leader: From the depths of our despair we call to you, Lord.
People: Hear my cry, O Lord, listen to my call for help.
Leader: If you kept a record of our sins, who could escape being condemned.
People: But you forgive us, so that we should stand in awe of you.
Collect
O God, we would have our lives controlled by your love. Our aim is to be kind and tenderhearted to one another, and to forgive one another, as you have forgiven us through Christ. We need your strength and guidance as we come to give you thanks and praise your holy name. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
O God, our tongues run away from us, and we find ourselves using harmful rather than helpful words. When we should be building one another up, we blurt out hurtful words that tear down. Forgive us, Lord, and through your Holy Spirit teach us so that what we say will do good to those who hear us. Amen.
Hymns
"Spirit Song"
"Are Ye Able"

Gospel Lesson: John 6:35, 41-51
Theme: The Promise Of Eternal Life
Call To Worship
Leader: Friends, why have you come?
People: We gather in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Leader: What are you doing here?
People: We come seeking the Bread of Life, to reaffirm our claim to eternal life, and to be renewed.
Leader: Will you open your ears, your eyes, your hearts to the Lord?
People: We will receive what God has for us in this hour.
Collect
O God, as we come to you this day hungering and thirsting for your word, so feed us with the Bread of Life that we may sense the renewing power of your Spirit, and begin to live with a new awareness of your love and purpose for each of us. In the life-giving name of Jesus we pray. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, we thank you for the new life you have given us that enables us to enter your kingdom now and for all eternity. We confess that we find it difficult always to love the way Jesus taught. With grateful hearts we claim the forgiveness you have promised, and seek the power of your Holy Spirit to show forth your love in all our words and deeds. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
