Call To Worship
A celebration of the God who is our foundation.
Leader:
The one constant,
People:
The unchanging reality,
Leader:
That we can always count on,
People:
That will never disappoint us,
Leader:
Is this,
People:
That the Father,
Leader:
Our Father,
People:
In heaven,
Leader:
Will never,
People:
Ever,
Leader:
Abandon or forsake us.
People:
Praise God!
Leader:
With hearts, and hands,
People:
And voices.
Leader:
Amen.
Based on 1 Corinthians 2:9.
Leader:
No eye has seen,
People:
No ear has heard,
Leader:
No mind has conceived,
People:
What God has prepared for those who love him.
Leader:
Oh, the glory of what has been prepared.
People:
Oh, the joy that lies ahead.
Leader:
Come, let us celebrate the glory,
People:
And enter into the joy.
Leader:
Amen.
People:
Amen.
In Ephesians 4, Paul tells us to not give the devil a foothold. We sometimes open the door to the devil by focusing on the following things.
Leader:
Mortgage payments,
People:
Family squabbles,
Leader:
Worries about your parents,
People:
About your children,
Leader:
A loved one in pain,
People:
Concerns about your reputation.
Leader:
These,
People:
And more,
Leader:
Are the baggage we carried in here this morning,
People:
Weighing us down.
Leader:
Now is the moment to let them go, and think instead on these things. God is great. God is good.
People:
God is love.
Leader:
And he loves us.
People:
And everything is in his hands.
Leader:
Come now, let us worship God,
People:
And find our peace in God.
Prayer Of Confession
More ways we give the devil a foothold.
Leader:
You say, "Be lavish with forgiveness,"
People:
But we hold grudges.
Leader:
You say, "Be generous with your treasure,"
People:
But we hide and horde it.
Leader:
You say, "Speak the truth in love,"
People:
But we tear down with our words.
Leader:
You say, "Love even your enemies,"
People:
But we hate and hurt.
Leader:
Author of love and life,
People:
Forgive us for listening to
Leader:
And obeying
People:
All the wrong voices.
Leader:
And tune now our hearts to hear only the truth of your sweet and perfect voice.
People:
And steel us to ignore every voice which seeks to lead us astray.
Leader:
We ask it in the name and power of Jesus Christ,
People:
Our Lord. Amen.
Option two.
Leader:
Lord, you call us to love others as you have loved us,
People:
We ignore your selfless example.
Leader:
You call us to turn the other cheek,
People:
We seek revenge.
Leader:
You call us to love our enemies,
People:
We hate them.
Leader:
You taught us that the world will know you by our love for one another,
People:
We bicker with each other over the smallest matters.
Leader:
You remind us to speak the truth in love,
People:
We gossip unkindly behind others' backs.
Leader:
Loving Lord, forgive our penchant for knocking others down in order to lift ourselves up.
People:
And continue to teach us
Leader:
That your love is not based on our status,
People:
Or our earthly performance,
Leader:
Or success,
People:
But only on the fact
Leader:
That you are Father of all.
People:
Help us to live in that love,
Leader:
And to love others with that love.
People:
Amen.
A third choice that focuses on more of the small ways we allow the devil to worm into our lives.
Leader:
We say we are free,
People:
But we live in slavery.
Leader:
We have been set free from selfishness,
People:
But we still wallow in it.
Leader:
We have been set free from pettiness,
People:
But we still put others under a microscope.
Leader:
We have been set free from greed
People:
But we still live to get more.
Leader:
We have been set free from all sin.
People:
But we still live as its slaves.
Leader:
Lord, forgive us for living in these self-made prisons.
People:
Help us to see that we are free,
Leader:
And to live freely.
People:
In the name of the truly free one, Jesus Christ, we pray.
Leader:
Amen.
Lastly, one based on the phrase, "Do not let the sun go down on your anger."
Leader:
I waited by the phone all night and the call never came. For this insensitivity I cannot forgive her.
People:
He forgot my birthday. How could he?
Leader:
I heard that she whispered some cruel things behind my back. See if I talk to her again!
People:
I hear he got kicked out of school for cheating.
Leader:
Doesn't surprise me. He always was a delinquent.
People:
She's drinking again. She's hopeless.
Leader:
He had an affair. What kind of Christian is he?
People:
Unforgivable!
Leader:
As he hung on the cross he said of those who had whipped him,
People:
And nailed him to a cross,
Leader:
And jammed a crown of thorns on his head,
People:
He said,
Leader:
"Father, forgive them for they know not what they do."
People:
Amen.
Assurance Of Pardon
Leader:
Amidst the bad news that sin's penalty is death,
People:
There is the good news,
Leader:
That God has paid the penalty for us,
People:
That we need not die,
Leader:
But can have eternal life.
People:
So let us turn to him,
Leader:
And receive the mercy that brings new
People:
And eternal life. Amen.
Prayer Of Dedication
O Bread of Heaven, you feed us until we want no more. Use us to feed others, that they might know you as we do. Amen.
Prayer For Illumination
Leader:
Jesus said, "Those who have ears, let them hear."
People:
Lord, give us ears.
Leader:
Allow us to hear the truth this morning.
People:
Amen.
Pastoral Prayer
In this prayer ask your congregation to simply agree with you in prayer. That is a large part of what a corporate prayer is; the Body of Christ agreeing together.
Introduce it this way: The weekly Pastoral Prayer is not my prayer, but our prayer. It is the prayer of the family of faith gathered together. Too often your role as the congregation is passive. This morning please participate with me by agreeing as I pray.
I will pray a phrase. After I pray it I will say, "Lord, hear our prayer." You will respond by saying, "Yes, Lord -- hear our prayer."
Let us pray ... (Here you will list prayers that are of concern to your particular family of faith, as well as prayers for the world.)
Benediction
Few things witness more clearly to the power of God in our lives, than does the quality of our relationships in Christ.
Let us go and live as lovers of God and each other. Amen.
