Lectionary Worship Workbook
Series III, Cycle A
Prayer Of The Day
P: O Jesus our Savior, turn our eyes toward you, that we would only seek your goodness. Open our mouths, that we would only speak that which you desire. Unclench our fists, so that we would trust you to make all things right, for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C: Amen.
Gospel Litany
P: Saving, losing,
C: our lives are always in motion.
P: Losing, finding,
C: you are at work in us even when we don't know it.
P: Saving, losing,
C: what goes on, on the inside, cannot always be seen on the outside.
P: Losing, finding,
C: follow Jesus, follow Jesus, follow Jesus,
P: and you will live.
C: Amen.
Offertory Prayer
C: We thank you, Father in heaven, that in your wisdom, you give us the means to receive your great gifts. Breaking all the rules, you call us to lose everything we know, and to find our life in you. Call to us again -- now -- that as we peel away the layers of materialism that we cling to, we would find a joy greater than money could buy, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Benediction
P: May your spirits soar as you serve those around you,
and may you be sustained in the life that God intends for you to live,
until that great day comes when good shall triumph over all.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, + and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.

Service Notes
In the United States and Canada, this is Labor Day weekend. Let this Sunday be a time for the blessing of our vocations as farmers, technicians, textile workers, computer programmers, artists, parents, students, and so on. Set a time aside preceding the offering and call the entire congregation forward. Then one at a time, ask them what their vocations are. Make the sign of the cross upon their foreheads and say an individual word of blessing for them, contextualized to their particular callings. (In a larger congregation people could stand together in groups, such as homemakers, teachers, volunteers, and so on. Some people may need to stand more than once.) Often times congregational members have no idea what their neighbors in the pew do Monday through Saturday. This word of blessing will help them not only to pray for each other, but also to give thanks for the necessity of each other's work for the good of our common life. Another option would be to ask people to bring some article to represent their work. During the offering they can bring them forward and a general blessing of labor can be offered.
