Series VI, Cycle A
Object:
Words Of Assurance
Here is the good news: "Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners."
-- To forgive you in your failure,
-- to accept you as you are,
-- to make you what you were meant to be.
Pastoral Prayer
Eternal God, high above our imaginations, whose judgments are a great deep, we worship you. We seek you in the sanctuary that we may be saved from ourselves. Small creatures are we, too much absorbed by trivial busyness; our lives, we confess, are filled with temporal details. Today in this place of worship, in awe before your eternity and greatness, we would gain altitude and horizon. Carry us out of ourselves into interests larger than ourselves. Let saints and scientists speak to us the memories of history and the thoughts of seers, that, so seeing ourselves as citizens of a great world, we may be greater because of it.
Save us from our weak self-pity. Our complaints rise before you, as have the lamentations of our ancestors before us. You understand how heavily life bears on us when the waves and billows go over us, and so we pray save us from our self-pity. Give us deep resources of interior strength that we may face life with adequacy, may rise above the difficulties that confront us and carry off a victory in spite of them; that thus life may grow strong from within and be triumphant without; that we may rejoice and be glad in it, difficult though it is. We know, Lord, that with your help, once again we can sing that we are more than conquerors through Christ who loves us.
Save us from weak excuses. Give us the honesty to face our sins. We acknowledge that we practice subterfuge and will not be candid concerning our failures. Grant that in this place of prayer, we may see the evils that we do harming not only ourselves but those for whom we care the most. Create in us clean hearts, O God.
Inspire all of us, we pray, to be equal to our great opportunities, responsible in the use of our freedom, sensitive in our relationships, and as generous as our Lord in the giving of ourselves.
All this we pray in the name of the One who came to reveal your reign, to heal this creation, and to show forth your love, even Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Benediction
Go forth in peace, walking in harmony with God who has created you, and walking in harmony with those who travel with you; and the blessing of God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit go with you. Amen.
