Proper 20
Prayer
Prayers in Dialogue
For use with Common and Lutheran Lectionaries
Pastor:
Lord God, again and again we are struck by your graciousness, which goes so far beyond fairness and ordinary justice, that we constantly find our usual values turned upside down.
Assistant: We praise you for regarding each of us through your love, not judging us by comparing us with others.
People:
Grant us a proper sense of awe at your mighty love, which rewards everyone with the same gift of eternal life.
Assistant: We seek your help, that we not become careless about response to you, thinking we can turn to you at a later time.
People:
Give us the joy of a lifelong walk in your presence; or the satisfaction of turning to you in the time of vital maturity; or the encouragement of completing life in your favor.
Pastor:
Almighty God, we are torn between living for you, and coming to the end of this life that we may be with you forever.
Assistant: We contemplate the glory and fulfillment it will be to dwell in your perfect presence, out of the grasp of sin and evil, in the company of all who have loved you.
People:
Endow us with faith and hope which will keep us in relationship with you now, that we may know your presence eternally.
Assistant: We acknowledge your will for our present lives, that you may work your grace through us as we reach out to others in your name.
People:
Entrust to us the special tasks for which you have called us as your people, and empower us to fulfill them.
(Other petitions may be included here.)
Pastor:
Give us patience to await the time you have set for us to complete this life;
Assistant: And help us to anticipate our dwelling with you then by serving you now,
People:
Even as we trust in our Lord Jesus Christ, and draw strength for living and dying from your Holy Spirit.
All: We pray to you, O God, in the name of the Lord Jesus, by the power of the Spirit. Amen (Our Father ...)
