Proper 20
Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle A
First Lesson: Exodus 16:2-15
Theme: Provide
Call To Worship
We come to this place carrying many anxieties, worries, and grievances. Know that God hears our complaints. Rest in the certainty that God provides. Let us worship God.
Collect
We praise you, Holy Parent, for your ability to move us beyond disquiet and complaint. We praise you for providing what we need each day. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We always want more, O God. Something greedy within us hungers far beyond what we require. Teach us to live like Type 2 diabetics who, as they learn to eat within the processing capability of a faulty pancreas, discover smaller amounts of food sustain and satisfy. Quiet our craving to live a week or year ahead. Teach us to direct our attention to today. Help us turn around the despair of uncertainty and treasure each morsel of food as a gift of sustenance and hope. Amen.
55A Hymns1
"He Leadeth Me" Tune: HE LEADETH ME
"Great Is [Thy][Your] Faithfulness" Tune: FAITHFULNESS
"[Be Not Dismayed][God Will Take Care Of You]" Tune: MARTIN

Call To Worship
Leader: Softly and tenderly you beckon, Jesus.
People: We speak for those who wrestle with diseases that will consume their lives.
Leader: Softly and tenderly you beckon, Jesus.
People: We speak for those who struggle with intimidating chronic conditions.
Leader: Softly and tenderly you beckon, Jesus.
People: We speak for those who want prematurely to escape, who mistakenly think their life is over.
Leader: Softly and tenderly you beckon, Jesus.
People: We speak for those who have given up and for those who refuse to give in.
All: We speak for all who are caught between the will to die and the will to live.
Collect
When we ask should I or should I not, turn our thoughts, O God, to how we can best serve you. How can we be of greatest help to those we would leave behind? When we ask how much longer, God, turn our question to what we run from that makes your call inviting. When we meet those for whom the push toward death draws stronger than the pull toward life, let our responses be understanding rather than condemnation, acceptance rather than judgment, and compassion rather than reproach. In the spirit of Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Help us, Compassionate God, to distinguish between needing a breather and needing to leave life behind. Help us separate boredom from exhaustion, lethargy from struggle-spent, and indifference from life-tired. Give us the courage to let go when the struggle is over. Refresh us when renewal is possible. In the name of Christ. Amen.
55A Hymns1
"Jesus, I Live To You" Tune: LAKE ENON
"Softly And Tenderly" Tune: SOFTLY AND TENDERLY [THOMPSON] OR "Precious Lord, Take My Hand" Tune: PRECIOUS LORD
"Holy Spirit, Truth Divine" Tune: MERCY or VIENNA
Proper 20
Sunday between September 18 and September 24 inclusive
Gospel: Matthew 20:1-16
Theme: Work
Call To Worship
Leader: Why do you work?
People: To pay the bills and put food on the table. To do our part in sharing responsibilities.
Leader: Why do you work?
People: To have something meaningful and fulfilling to do. To benefit others because of our efforts.
Leader: Why do you work?
People: To learn and hone the skills of our talents. To honor the gifts God has given us.
Collect
We come to you, O God, as those whose work is fulfilling vocation and as those for whom the thought of work brings frustration. We stand before you as those unable to work and as those sized down beneath their stature. Together we come, Benevolent Sustainer, some grumbling and grouching and others swelling sighs of gratitude. Thank you for understanding us. In the name of Jesus the Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We think, O Generous One, that we need much more than we actually do. Many whose incomes exceed what we require feel empty because we have forgotten to share. Many whose incomes fall short somehow make do. Some among us are impoverished of things but plentiful of spirit. Help us all to keep money in proper perspective. Help us manage the funds we have and keep in focus our intent to live and work as meaningfully as we are able. Amen.
55A Hymns1
"In Christ There Is No East Or West" Tune: ST. PETER or McKEE
"[Born][Son] Of God, Eternal Savior" Tune: WEISSE FLAGGEN
"Dear [Master][Jesus], In Whose Life I See" Tune: O JESU CHRISTE, WAHRES LICHT or HURSLEY
