Proper 23
Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle A
First Lesson: Exodus 32:1-14
Theme: I Love You
Call To Worship
Can you imagine God having a divine temper tantrum? When Aaron's play at leadership resulted in the molten calf, God's wrath came close to exploding. But Moses implored and Moses prompted and God changed his mind.
Collect
Here, O God, we can remind one another of the promises we have made on the chancel steps -- promises at baptism or christening, at confirmation, of marriage or partnership, of church membership, of commission to carry out an important task. No matter how bad things become, we can come here, renew our promises, and begin again. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Leader: Why don't you just give up on us, God?
Middle Of Life Persons: We are so wrapped up in our own lives. It's do this and do that and money, money, and more money, God. It's things and more things. Whenever we do get a moment, all we can think about is play.
People: Why don't you just give up on us, God?
Leader: I love you, says God.
Youths: We force our limits most of the time. We defy, we rebel, we resist, God.
People: Why don't you just give up on us, God?
Leader: I love you, says God.
Oldest Persons: We want to be finished with responsibility. We won't live forever, God. We're held together by metal and tenacity.
People: Why don't you just give up on us, God?
Leader: I love you, says God.
All: God loves. Amen.

Second Lesson: Philippians 4:1-9
Theme: Rejoice
Call To Worship
One way to stand firm in our faith is to focus on the strengths of positive attitude. Look for what is worthy of praise. Lay aside worry. Respond with gentleness. Concentrate on what is true, honorable, just, pure, pleasing, and commendable. These are the words of the writer of the letter to the church at Philippi. What if we were to carry this counsel into our homes, schools, businesses, and places of work today?
Collect
In times of increasing criticism and ballooning of petty concerns, Christians have the advantage of a hopeful perspective. We gather at this place of worship determined to keep on doing the things that we learn here about you, dear God, so that your peace, which surpasses all understanding, might guard our hearts and our minds in Christ Jesus. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
The wisdom of our faith offers practical guidance for living beyond the doors of this sanctuary. We are grateful for your counsel, O God. We pray that we might hold on to these truths so they will have a chance to influence our lives and the lives of those around us. Amen.

Proper 23
Sunday between October 9 and October 15 inclusive

Theme: Disciple?
Call To Worship

Leader: The call is to become worthy before God.
People: Sometimes we do not care and miss out.
Leader: What we expect may be far different from God's idea of discipleship.
People: Sometimes we do not listen.
All: We would listen with our hearts and hear.
Collect
We see, O God, that in being chosen, we also make a choice. We see that to become a disciple requires discipleship. We see that to become worthy before you, O God, we, as you do, must set aside our unworthiness. For the sake of Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
All:
How do we know when you have called us, God? We might read the signs as wishful thinking. Someone else's invitation? What if we follow but are not prepared? How do we know when you have chosen us, O God? So many questions come with discipleship. How do we know what you have in mind? How could we possibly be worthy?
Leader: Know that God's realm is filled with surprises.
58A Hymns
"Rejoice, O People, In The Mounting Years" Tune: YORKSHIRE
"As We Gather At Your Table" Tune: BEACH SPRING
"Take Time To Be Holy" Tune: HOLINESS or SLANE
