Lectionary Worship Aids
Series VII, Cycle C
Object:
First Lesson: Jeremiah 29:1, 4-7
Theme: Make Yourself At Home
Call To Worship
God has given us a good home, not made with human hands, but the world that surrounds us, sustains us, and despite our best efforts to destroy it, yet endures. Seek the welfare of this planet where you have been planted, and make yourself at home, here in this sanctuary, and here in this world.
Collect
This world is still my home, though I am passing through.
My God whose kingdom's still to come wants us to serve him, too.
The beauty of the spring, the silence of the fall,
The bounty of the summer calls to mind his kingdom hall.
This world is still my home. When winter snowstorms camp
Upon the hillsides white and stark so horses stamp and champ
I celebrate the love that promises us yet more --
We've got a home on earth for now and heaven evermore.
Prayer Of Confession
Gracious Lord, we have demonized the people who share this world with us. We have turned our back on your cities, and set our eyes so firmly on heaven that we have ignored your bounties here on earth, allowing species to be destroyed and resources degraded. We know your Son is coming back, the heir of all things, and that he has a right to expect that we have been good stewards. If there is still time, Lord, we once more dedicate our lives to the service of your people and your world. Amen.
