Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle A
First Lesson: Exodus 33:12-23
Theme: Invisible
Call To Worship
Leader: God's presence goes with us
People: Into the territories of leadership --he boardroom, the conference, the classroom.
Leader: God's presence goes with us
People: Into areas of trailblazing -- parenting, growing a marriage, building a new career.
Leader: Through all our journeys, God's presence goes with us.
All: Praise be to God.
Collect
Gracious God who knows us tenderly by name, to you we turn with praise and adoration. Although we cannot perceive you through earthly senses, we want to accept the possibility of your existence. Although we muse at times that you are the invention of our needs, we choose to believe that you are greater than us alone. We are not the deities, you are the one true God. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
When we cannot see into others' eyes, at first we distrust them. We wonder what they conceal from us. We do not want you to be invisible, O God. We want to see your face. We think we need to look into your eyes in order to know you, soul to soul. Teach us that other trust with heart contact coming beyond sensory perception. Teach us to listen. Teach us to look around us for evidence of your presence. Give us the courage to accept knowing you only in part. Amen.
59A Hymns

"God [Himself Is][Is Truly] With Us" or "God Himself Is Present" Tune: ARNSBERG (WUNDERBARER KONIG) OR "God, Whose Love Is Reigning O'er Us" Tune: LAUDA ANIMA
"Softly And Tenderly" Tune: SOFTLY AND TENDERLY [THOMPSON]
Proper 24
Sunday between October 16 and October 22 inclusive
Second Lesson: 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10
Theme: One By One
Call To Worship
Grace to you, people of this congregation. We give thanks to God for all of you and mention you in our prayers. We remember your works of faith, your labors of love, and the steadfastness of your hope. Peace to you, people of God.
Collect
Through the word, you come to us one by one, Holy Sustainer. You reveal your nearness through the unique empowerment of each of us. You show your presence through the Holy Spirit. One by one, we offer this gathering of thanks and gratitude. In the name of Jesus, our Savior. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
When we hear again, dear God, that others call us by name in prayers to you, we feel that we do count. When we see that others have noticed the most modest of our loving labors, we know a sustenance that renews the soul's energy. We as a congregation are the church, O God, yet this church can be nothing without individual members. We would ask to be gentle locators of hope, tender uncoverers of hidden faith, and encouragers among those who are trying to transform their hope and their faith into actions that reflect service to you, O God. Amen.
59A Hymns
"Praise, O Praise Our God And King" Tune: MONKLAND
"O Brother Man, Fold To Thy Heart Thy Brother" or "Children Of God" Tune: INTERCESSOR or WELWYN
"Awake, My Soul, Stretch Every Nerve" Tune: CHRISTMAS
Proper 24
Sunday between October 16 and October 22 inclusive
Gospel: Matthew 22:15-22
Theme: Visible
Call To Worship
Leader: We assemble as people of a faith.
People: We live as citizens of a community.
Leader: We belong to the family of God which encompasses all time and space.
People: We belong to a neighborhood that stretches across a world of time zones.
All: We are connected to this world but also anticipate another realm.
Collect
We find signs of your presence, O God, wherever people are, for your realm knows no unholy place. It is we, not you, who divide the world into categories of the secular and the holy. It is we, not you, who play political games with each other. We pray that we might decrease our hypocritical habits as we increase our dedication to be true in all areas of living to what we profess in church. In the name of Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
God, grant us the wisdom to know when to separate from the things that are God's what belongs to the secular world. Let us keep our values in proper place so we avoid worshiping society as a lesser God. Give us the courage to avoid succumbing to distracting traps that others set for us. Give us the wisdom to recognize, then to dismiss, their negative games. Help us speak for what we know to be right rather than compromise our beliefs. We ask in Jesus' name. Amen.
59A Hymns
"Here, O My Lord, I See [Thee][You] Face To Face" Tune: LANGRAN
"Jesus, Where'er Thy People Meet" Tune: FEDERAL STREET
"I Love [Thy][Your] Kingdom, Lord" Tune: ST. THOMAS
