Proper 25
Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series VI, Cycle C
Theme: The Lord Is Among Us
Call To Worship
Leader: O God, it is right for us to praise you and keep our promises to you.
People: People all over the world and across the distant seas trust in you.
Leader: The whole world stands in awe of the great things that you have done.
People: Your deeds bring shouts of joy from one end of the earth to the other.
Collect
Generous and Caring God, we live as though the world owed us, and soon we forget that all we have comes from you. Creator God, we gather to thank you for your many blessings and to sing your praises. You have done wonderful things for us, and in gratitude we would serve you faithfully. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Almighty God, we go about life feeling sorry for ourselves because we think we must face all our difficulties alone. How foolish we are, Lord. Deep in our hearts we know we are never alone, for you are with us always. Forgive us, we pray, and in the sure knowledge of your abiding presence, may we go forth to meet all our tomorrows courageously. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
O God, out of the abundance with which we have been blessed, we return a portion for the work of the Church in building your kingdom. Accept these gifts as symbols of our love for you. Amen.
Hymns
"Come, Thou Almighty King"
"Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates"
"I Want Jesus To Walk With Me"
Proper 25/Ordinary Time 30
Sunday between October 23 and October 29 inclusive
Second Lesson: 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18
Theme: Keep The Faith
Call To Worship
Friends and colleagues may desert us in our hour of need, but the Lord will stay with us and give us strength.
Come, let us worship the Lord, our God, giving thanks for his steadfastness and praise for his wondrous works for us.
Collect
Lord, we are in the race of life to the end, but we are not sure we can fight the good fight, finish the race, and keep the faith without your help. Be our constant companion, giving us strength and keeping us on the right track, we pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Merciful Father, when we have failed to do our best, when we have felt like dropping out of the race, and when our faith has faltered, we have failed you. We ask your forgiveness for these lapses in our determination to serve you, and we seek the power of your Holy Spirit to be faithful disciples. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
Lord, we are grateful for the heritage which is ours, and for the faithfulness of those who have gone before us in the work of your Church. Accept these gifts, we pray, that we may do our part and be able to pass on the baton to those who follow us in the race of life. Amen.
Hymns
"God Will Take Care Of You"
"How Firm A Foundation"
"O God, Our Help In Ages Past"
Proper 25/Ordinary Time 30
Sunday between October 23 and October 29 inclusive
Gospel Lesson: Luke 18:9-14
Theme: Humility
Call To Worship
Come near to God, and he will come near to you. Humble yourself before the Lord, and he will lift you up.
Come, let us worship together.
Collect
Almighty God, you are the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. We live in an era of changing customs and lifestyles. We are bombarded on every side by advice to nurture our self-esteem, to put our own welfare first, and to pursue our own individual goals. In such a time, Lord, we need your guidance and help to keep us humble and to prevent us from building ourselves up at the expense of others. May this time of worship be an opportunity for us to renew our faith so that finally the humble will be exalted and the proud brought low. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, we thank you for the gift of your Son and for the example he gave us of true humility in serving others. We must confess, though, that there have been times when we have resisted playing the servant role and felt it was beneath our dignity. Forgive us, we pray, and help us to rejoice in every opportunity we are given to serve you by serving our neighbors. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
O God, humbly we present these offerings, knowing that each of us could probably do more. Accept our gifts as well as our service, which we dedicate to your glory. Amen.
Hymns
"Spirit Of The Living God"
"I Need Thee Every Hour"
"Lord, I Want To Be A Christian"
