A GOSPEL TREASURY
Poems Based on Lectionary Gospels
Of the people who came to the temple,
there were many whose vesture was grand.
And they came to the Court of the Women
all proudly, with offering in hand.
As they dropped in their gold with a flourish,
that attention of all they would claim.
With their fringes and tassels aswinging,
they might bow to acknowledge their fame.
And then, in a moment of quiet,
in a robe that was ragged and worn,
came a widow, who slipped through the temple
among people who viewed her with scorn.
As she came to the place of the off'ring,
from her pocket, two coppers she took.
And she placed them amidst all the silver
and gold, hoping no one would look.
But One saw, Who sat in the background,
Who knew just how hard it had been
for the widow to put in both coppers
from an income so terribly thin.
Jesus spoke of it to his disciples.
And he told them the gift that she gave
was greater than gold coins or silver,
as nothing she held back to save.
There were many who gave from their plenty,
great gifts of their silver and gold.
But she gave, of her little, the total.
She had nothing left to withhold.
And the value of anything given,
whatever the off'ring may be,
should be seen in its cost to the giver.
He who gave on the cross would agree.
