Proper 27
Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle A
First Lesson: Joshua 24:1-3a, 14-25
Theme: As For Me And My Household
Call To Worship
Leader: Choose this day whom you will serve, God or some lesser god.
People: We will serve God. We come to serve God with sincerity and faithfulness.
Collect
O God, we come as households and families of many definitions to reaffirm our commitment to you. Like Joshua of old, we, too, promise, "As for me and my household, we will serve God." Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
The god of money, the god of prestige, the god of snobbery, of advanced degrees, of arrogance, football, self -- these lesser gods we also know, O Holy One. Help us keep them in their place. Give us the tenacity to honor you. Through Christ. Amen.
62A Hymns
"[O][Oh] For A Thousand Tongues To Sing" Tune: AZMON
"O For A Closer Bond With God" Tune: BEATITUDO OR "O For A Heart To Praise My God" Tune: RICHMOND
"Guide My Feet" Tune: GUIDE MY FEET OR "O Jesus, I Have Promised" Tune: ANGEL'S STORY
Proper 27
Sunday between November 6 and November 12 inclusive
Second Lesson: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
Theme: Hope's Gift
Call To Worship
In this time between autumnal splashes of color and Advent's resurrection of hope, skeletal trees and faded grass gloom our thoughts toward death. Come to worship today appreciating God's gift to the faithful of an immutable comfort.
Collect
God of grace, we praise you for your gift of hope. We are grateful that Jesus' death was for all people of the household in all time -- those who knew nothing about him, his contemporaries, and all who have come and will come after his day. Our encouragement enters as sighs of relief because you save us all from our sinful selves. All glory be to you, O God. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
In bleak moments of unbelief, dear God, we ponder what will happen to us after we die. Some who have known suffering wonder if we will ever know peace or wholeness. Some who knowingly have gone against what is right envision the possible consequences after death. Help us remember, Holy Parent, that you alone are present with us in all things, through all matters, and beyond all time. Despite what we have done, and how we have been, you remain with us all, O Thou Triune God. Amen.
62A Hymns
"Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise" Tune: ST. DENIO
"Still, Still With Thee" Tune: CONSOLATION
"Eternal Father, Strong To Save" Tune: MELITA
Proper 27

Gospel: Matthew 25:1-13
Theme: Be Prepared
Call To Worship
Leader: Come, pay attention.
People: Listen up.
Leader: Come, make ready.
People: Anticipate, now.
Leader: Come, prepare.
People: Be wise.
Collect
God, our prayer is to grow in our sense of responsibility in all realms of life -- health, work, and church. We would focus on what is important. We would do the necessary things ahead of time to be ready. We would be wise. In the Spirit of Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Gracious God, we put off things until the last moment. Sometimes we squeeze by. Other times, we are too late and lose. We act without thinking, then wonder why things go wrong. We are passive when the call is to act. Help us greet with strong habits of preparation the anticipated changes in our lives so that encounters with the unexpected might be more facile. Amen.
62A Hymns
"I Greet Thee, Who My Sure Redeemer Art" Tune: SONG 24
"Lead, Kindly Light, Amid The Circling Gloom" or "Unto The Hills We Lift Our Longing Eyes" Tune: LUX BENIGNA or SANDON
"With Songs And Honors Sounding Loud" Tune: ELLACOMBE
