Call to Worship
Leader: Arise, your light has come. It is now time to worship God.
People: Christ is the light of the world.
Leader: Don't hide your light under a bushel.
People: We let our light shine for all the world to see.
Leader: Now that the light shines forth in the world,
People: Let us take the warmth of that light and share it with those who are in darkness.
Leader: Let us come together to praise God.
Prayer of Thanksgiving
Gracious and loving God, as the days grow shorter, we are so grateful for the light of the sun, and for the warmth it gives to the earth. We thank you for the seasons of the year, and the changes they cause in us. They remind us that we are people of the earth, the earth that you created. We thank you, God, for the rhythms of the seasons, and especially for autumn. Autumn reminds us so much of our relationship with you, and our dependence on your grace. Thank you, God, for the season of harvest, as we gather in, and then make decisions on the distribution of our riches. Help us to be good stewards of your grace, both in what we give to others and in that which we keep for ourselves. Help us remember that it is more blessed to give than to receive - that and you have gifted us with so much. We are your grateful people. Amen.
Scripture Readings
1 Thessalonians 5:1--11: This passage can either be read in the traditional way by one reader or can be done by a choral speaking choir.
4 5 6 10 11 12
1 2 3 7 8 9
Voices 1--6: Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anything written to you.
Voices 7--12: For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.
Voice 1: When they say,
Voice 9: There is peace and security,
Voice 1: Then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman,
Voices 4--6: And there will be no escape!
Voices 7--12: But you, beloved, are not in darkness, for that day to surprise you like a thief;
All: For you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. So then let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober;
Voices 2--3: For those who sleep sleep at night,
Voices 7--8: And those who are drunk get drunk at night.
All: But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, and put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation.
Voices 1--6: For God has destined us not for wrath but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,
Voices 7--12: Who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live with them.
All: Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing.
Matthew 25:14--30: This passage is the familiar parable of the talents. It would be a good parable to recreate dramatically, but the ending is harsh; so have older students recreate it. Perhaps the senior high class could work with this passage and give it a modern edge. It could take place on Wall Street, and could include a group of traders working with a wealthy, but cruel client. If you want it to be read as written, then it still could be done dramatically. Cast would include a Narrator, Wealthy Landowner, 5--talent Slave, 2--talent Slave, and 1--talent Slave for a cast of five.
Call to Offering
During this Stewardship season as we ponder how to distribute the gifts God has given us, let us bring some of those gifts to God as we collect the morning offering.
Prayer of Dedication
Glorious God, we bring you what we have, however we may decide. Now help us use it in your service and to your glory; remembering how Jesus gave of himself for us. Amen.
Benediction
Leader: To you, O God, we lift our eyes, marveling at your goodness.
People: Help us be good to those we meet, sharing more of ourselves than we think is necessary.
Leader: Use your gifts and they will multiply; hide them and they will gather moss.
People: We will use the many gifts God has bestowed upon us.
Leader: Use them for good, in the name of God who created us, Christ who loves us, and the Holy Spirit who gives us aid. Amen.
