Call to Worship
Leader: Our hope is built on nothing less than Jesus' love and righteousness.
People: We dare not trust our earthly frame, but wholly lean on Jesus' name.
Leader: On Christ, the solid Rock, we stand;
People: All other ground is sinking sand.
All: All other ground is sinking sand.
Prayer of Invocation
Builder God, we come today to listen to the stories of faith. You are our refuge and our strength. This house of worship makes us feel safe and cared for - and brings us closer to you. Come to us in this place. Teach us how to build up this world we live in. Help us to build on solid ground, using strong materials, obeying your instructions, listening as you guide us while we work. Be with us on our journey. Amen.
Scripture Readings
Genesis 6:19--22; 7:24; 8:14--19: Use this passage (Noah) for the Children's Sermon to use the "building" idea with and through God.
Psalm 46: This passage can be done well having the congregation read it as a litany. Have one side of the congregation read the uneven verses and the other side read the even verses. Have both sides say, "Selah," whenever it occurs.
Matthew 7:21--29: Have one person be Jesus teaching the folk in the synagogue. It would be best for them to have the passage memorized. After Jesus has finished verse 27, have him stop and simply "freeze" in place, and have another person come out and say verses 28 and 29 as though he is simply explaining what is going on (like an "overvoice" in a movie).
Prayer of Dedication
God, we know that you are a God of all people. There is no distinction in your mind because of race, size, language, or gender. We bring our gifts to you today to be given to help all people. We ask that they assist the poor, the homeless, the hopeless in some way. Take our gifts and use them in your service. Amen.
Benediction
Leader: Jesus taught as one who had authority. He knew what he was saying.
People: Help us to listen and to believe. Then help us to tell others as if we have authority.
Leader: Go as people of God. Tell the story as if your life depends upon it.
People: Jesus, you are our model of ministry. Our life does depend on you. Amen.
