A GOSPEL TREASURY
Poems Based on Lectionary Gospels
So many laws, ancient and modern,
All are important, someone is sure.
In North Carolina,
Thou shalt plow no cotton field with an elephant.
In Victorian England,
Speak ill of the Queen and become an Australian.
In Maryland,
Thou shalt hold thy nose for not over a second.
In Hawaii,
Thou shalt put no pennies into thine ears.
In Kentucky,
Thou shalt walk no public road in a bathing suit
unless thou carryest a club.
In Jesus’ time,
Thou shalt pick no grain to eat on the Sabbath,
even if hungry.
How important?
I wonder.
More important,
how important to God?
Jesus questioned.
(All laws quoted are genuine.)
