Proper 5
Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle A
First Lesson: Genesis 12:1-9
Theme: Go, Come, Be A Blessing
Call To Worship
Leader: Go!
People: Come!
All: Be a blessing!
Leader: We hear the word "blessing," and know it as a special word for someone else, certainly not for us. Then a person whom we respect tells us, "You are a blessing," and we ponder those words. Turn now to someone near you. Quietly say to each other, "You are a blessing." During this time of worship consider how, indeed, you are a blessing.
Collect
Go, be a blessing, you told Abram, O God of blessings. Go, be a blessing to others, you tell us, because you are a blessing to me, your God. Open our hearts, dear God, to hear your affirming "I Am" about ourselves. Let us nod and smile and agree that we are worthy of your love and your blessing. Let us go and be a blessing because you have blessed our being from the beginning. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Embarrassed? Yes, a little, God. Mostly, we think about the ways we are not a blessing to others, to ourselves, and to you. Forgive us when we focus on things that bring the death of our soul instead of drawing us toward a life that gently blesses. Amen.
40A Hymns
"Spirit, Spirit Of Gentleness" Tune: SPIRIT
"Spirit Of The Living God" Tune: IVERSON
"Guide Me, O [My Great Redeemer][Thou Great Jehovah]" Tune: CWM RHONDDA
Proper 5
Sunday between June 5 and June 11 inclusive
Second Lesson: Romans 4:13-25
Theme: Buoyancy
Call To Worship
Leader: How do we grow strong in our faith?
People: First, give God some credit.
Leader: Be convinced that God is able to do as God has promised.
People: Practice being faithful.
Leader: Avoid weakening when we observe what is already weak.
People: Adopt an attitude of faith.
Leader: Choose hope, where there is little hope.
People: Believe that what you hope for will happen.
Collect
When our faith quivers, we remember the miracle that faith is and look up to you, O Faithful One. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
The same water that could drown us, dear God, cradles us in an easy float when we trust it and skim across the pool. We could follow the rules of a swim stroke, proper kick, and regulation of breathing, yet still sink to the bottom if we did not first trust the water. Give us the courage to love you with that faith, Thou Great Sustainer. As Jesus taught us. Amen.
40A Hymns
"He Lives" Tune: ACKLEY
"My Faith Looks Up to Thee" Tune: OLIVET
"Who Trusts In God, A Strong Abode" Tune: WAS MEIN GOTT WILL
Proper 5
Sunday between June 5 and June 11 inclusive
Gospel: Matthew 9:9-13, 18-26
Theme: Mercy
Call To Worship
Leader: When we sacrifice, we have something to offer. We give up something that we cherish. With sacrifice, we have the possibility and power of choice. Sacrifice is a gift to others.
People: Mercy meets our posture of vulnerability. Mercy asks us to receive compassion, forgiveness, and kindness as a path to wholeness. Mercy is a gift to us.
All: Praise to our healing God.
Collect
We honor you, O Christ, who dares to enter places we would rather not go. We honor you, O Christ, whose awareness knows who is broken. We honor you, O Christ, worker of miracles. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
It is easier for us to mingle with the righteous than to seek out the troubled. We fancy ourselves to be righteous while trying to ignore that we, too, need healing. We, too, need to ask mercy of you. Amen.
40A Hymns
"Immortal Love, Forever Full" or "Serenity" Tune: BEATITUDO or SERENITY
"O Christ, The Healer, We Have Come" Tune: KENTRIDGE OR "Heal Me, Hands Of Jesus" Tune: SUTTON COMMON
"Savior, Again To [Thy][Your] Dear Name" Tune: ELLERS
