Zoos are no longer in people's good graces.
Religion faces the same problem.
Certain illusions about freedom plague them both.

Call To Worship
Leader: A good summer morning to you! Are you alert, centered, and talkative? Are you joyfilled? Are you ready to sing?
People: Ah, yes. We are thankful for life and we are seeking security and happiness.
Leader: We have called to God many times and the Holy One has sustained us and restored us to hopefulness.
People: With music and dance, with words and silence, we thank God for divine goodness among us!
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader)
God of Words and Silence -- we are glad for the many ways we can express our love for you, and we are grateful for the myriad of ways you make your presence known to us. We are glad for scripture stories that encourage us to care for one another. We offer you our undivided attention so that we might know and feel your grace. Amen.
Call To Confession (Leader)
Elijah moved among the Hebrews with words of judgment and words of healing. Like the widow in the 1 Kings story today, we have many concerns. Do we have enough food? Will our resources last as long as we live? Will our bodies and minds stay strong? At some point each of us will die but until that moment, let us live fully, doing what is pleasing to the Holy One and caring for one another. Pray the printed prayer with me.
Community Confession (Unison)
Story Keeper -- we are like the widows in the Bible stories.
We lose so much day by day, year by year.
We get numb to the pain and advertising.
We forget to wait for you to heal us and to show us a new way.
We entertain ourselves and neglect making time for conversation with you.
We want the healing touch of Jesus to strengthen us and wipe away our tears. Amen.
Sermon Idea
Galatians 1:23 raises our eyebrows! What happens internally that transforms us today? What changes our perceptions of truth? And then, how do we articulate psyche/soul metamorphosis? How do we break previous habits and behave in new (wholesome) ways? Another issue in this text is that of public and institutional validation of our inner experience. It is an awesome experience to have "walked with the Spirit" and then have no one believe "your truth." Ask any schizophrenic who has not taken his/her medication. What about the fundamentalist in every religion who perceives God speaking, often claiming personal advantage/reward at the expense of others? Reputation is as important to the apostle as it is to any congregation/individual today; it is part of our identities and must be guarded from theft and defilement. In a culture where it is important to know the "right" people in order to get a job or accepted into an educational program, reputation sometimes carries more weight than actual accomplishments and qualifications.
The Luke story asks, "What makes us afraid spiritually and what do we do when we have had an awesome experience?" Some theologies say that when life is going well, people tend to forget God. Others suggest that joy and awe, curiosity and imagination are perpetual avenues to Mystery. From the texts in Luke and 1 Kings, what is dying in us that needs rejuvenated?
Contemporary Affirmation (Unison)
We know God, the Creator, by many names;
we believe that God, the Holy One, loves us and all creation.
We know Jesus of Nazareth taught people to love friends and enemies;
we believe Jesus' teachings lead us to satisfaction in living.
We believe the Holy Spirit is moving throughout the global village,
inviting all peoples to live peaceably together;
we experience the Holy Spirit to be motivating us to journey toward
internal contentment and external service for justice.
In community, we are stimulated intellectually to ask questions
about the meaning of life and Mystery.
We are challenged to know ourselves and to relate to God.
We are soothed during the painful parts of life and in good times,
we share our rejoicings! Hurrah! Yippee! Hallelujah!
Offertory Statement (Leader)
With your own language, your own talents, and your own moneys, you can respond with generosity so that tangible goodness continues in this place.
Doxology
The Lone, Wild Bird (v. 2, modified), tune: PROSPECT
The ends of earth are in God's hand, The sea's dark deep and far-off land.
And I am yours! I rest in you. Great Spirit, come, and rest in me.
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader)
Giver of Hope -- we are grateful for the ways you are among us, blessing us in multiple ways. Thank you for this money; multiply it to pay our bills and feed the hungry. Amen.
Intercessory Prayers (Leader or Readers)
Life-Giving Spirit -- how quickly the beauty of spring turns into the heat of summer! Global warmth is in our backyards! Fresh water is beyond our grasp! We pray for gentle rains to refresh the land and our own souls. We also recognize the pain and loss of people whose homes and crops have been destroyed by the violence of storms. Awaken in all of us the wisdom to cooperate with the earth's systems and with your resuscitation for our spirits day by day.
God of Thinkers -- we read the stories of return to life and wish that death only came to all creatures when it was "appropriate." Like men and women before us, we long for security, health, and peace. We want wars to cease and sons and daughters in every nation to live wholesome and neighborly lives. Guide our thoughts so that peace is deep in our behaviors and decisions.
Integrator of Mind and Body -- we are grateful for the knowledge science has accumulated. We pray for the next generation. May technology and economics enrich their understanding and may their hearts turn toward the teachings of Jesus. Like the widows' sons in scripture, may our sons and daughters receive soul life that enables them to carry good news and civil habits everywhere they go. Rejuvenate cultures so that people establish gentleness and honesty as every-day-ways to do business and make peace.
Community Builder -- we are grateful for the women and men who enrich our lives. We are glad for resources to pay our bills and sustain ministry in this place. Satisfy our longings and let our decisions manifest your vitality here at church home and in our city. Amen.
Benediction (Leader or Readers)
Life is a journey to Mystery.
Experiment with multiple names for God;
Explore different ways to respond to the Holy Spirit.
Laugh each day and unbuild the overwhelming towers of the world.
Notice possibilities around each corner;
Make dreams and cultivate a glad heart!
Holy Spirit empowers you and me to live real life --
Peace be yours, deep peace. Amen.
