Water From the Well
Lectionary Devotional For Cycle A
Object:
Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.
-- Psalm 33:8
As one is meditating on the Lord's Prayer, one could use Psalm 33 to deepen our understanding of the petition, "Hallowed be thy name." This psalm is a song of praise that can help us understand the implications of God's name being hallowed. The righteous, or those who stand in right relationship with God, are called to hallow God's name with melody, song, and loud shouts (vv. 1-3). Praise is an appropriate character trait of those in right relationship with God. "Praise befits the upright." The word of the Lord demonstrated the Lord's love of righteousness and justice (vv. 4-5). One can see that in how God brought about the created universe. "For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm." It is by the word of God that the chaos is brought into right relationship or righteousness. God's love of justice is also seen in how the plan of nations may falter, but the council of the Lord is perpetual. "The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing ... the counsel of the Lord stands forever and the thoughts of his heart to all generations." It is the nature of God never to forget, and we offer praise to God when we celebrate the memory of God's actions. To hallow God's name is to celebrate God's faithfulness in the past and future through the music of song and instruments that announce to the world around us that God is our joy.
