Call to Worship (based on Psalm 116)
Leader: I love my God, because God has heard my voice and my supplications.
People: Because God's ear has been inclined toward me, I will call on God as long as I live.
Leader: I will offer a thanksgiving sacrifice and call on Yahweh.
People: In the courts of the house of Yahweh, I will praise God forever!
Call to Confession
Abram's wife Sarai, laughed because she didn't believe that God would give her children when she was old. How often we laugh in the face of God's gifts. "It can't be true," we say, or "Not me!" Let us now confess our sins before God, first silently, then corporately. Let us pray.
Prayer of Confession
Faithful God, in the book of Romans we read the passage, "Suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit." Suffering is often when we grow in faith the most. It's the time when we recognize our need for you. But even then, when we pray to you, we hedge our bets. We make deals with you that we don't keep once the suffering has passed. How disappointed you must be in us, O God. Forgive us for our weakness in times of suffering and in times of great joy. Help us endure, increase our character, give us hope. We can't do it without you, God. Amen.
Assurance of Forgiveness
Romans 5 tells us that since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand. God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. Alleluia! We are forgiven. Amen.
Scripture Readings
Genesis 18:1--5: The Genesis story is a wonderful story to use as drama. The cast includes: Narrator, Abraham, three Visitors, Sarah, Servant, Midwife, Baby. Try giving the passage to the junior or senior high Sunday school class and ask them to act it out for church. Give it to them four weeks ahead so that they can memorize the lines and use props. It is a great story for them to work through.
Matthew 9:35-10:8 (9--23): The Matthew passage is very long, but I think the instructions to the disciples are what are important. I would begin with 10:5 and continue through verse 23. The sermon can be what God's faithful people were asked to do - in that time of history. What are we being asked to do today? One person can read the passage.
Call to Offering
What shall we return to God for all bounty given to us? The Psalmist answers, "I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of God. I will pay my vows to Yahweh in the presence of all people." The ushers will now wait upon us for the morning offering.
Prayer of Dedication
Jesus said, "The harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few." Today we bring our harvest to you. We also bring ourselves as your laborers. Give us good work to do in your name, God. May our gifts of money go to feed the homeless and may our gifts of time be that of the hands that prepare the food. Help us to be peacemakers in the world today. Amen.
Benediction
Leader: As you go, proclaim the good news, "The kingdom of God has come near."
People: We will go out with joy and gratitude.
Leader: Remember the work of the twelve disciples. Go and seek the lost sheep. Give of yourselves freely.
People: We will go out with praise and thanksgiving.
Leader: It is not you who speak, but the Spirit of God speaking through you.
People: Fill us; use us - Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on us.
