Zoos are no longer in people's good graces.
Religion faces the same problem.
Certain illusions about freedom plague them both.

Call To Worship
Leader: Let me guess: You've come here to enjoy one another?
People: Yes. But more importantly, we've come to be still in Divine Presence and respond with words, music, and silent thoughtfulness.
Leader: Together, then, let us sing joyfully and listen reverently.
People: God invites us to be cheerful and expects us to be honest.
Leader: In Holy Presence, we learn to be do-ers of goodness, to be compassionate, and to be thankful for what life brings to us.
All: Together, we will listen for God's voice and be thankful for divine love.
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader)
Gracious God -- thank you for this place and your presence among us. Thank you for bringing us to this point in our living and learning. We want to be happy and so we seek to be continually aware of your affirmation. We are loyal companions on this trek to eternity and we watch for your guiding light. Amen.
Call To Confession (Leader)
Throughout the global village this morning, violence and hatred maim bodies and minds. Here in our own city people go hungry and homeless. Yet the teachings of Jesus challenge us to end poverty and establish justice. The cruel and gruesome lurk on our streets. Yet Jesus challenges us to be peace-makers and to love even our enemies. These teachings are difficult to carry out. We each have our own prejudices, our own disappointments, and our own guilt. Pray with me the printed prayer and then have your personal conversation with the Holy One.
Community Confession (Unison)
Designer of Humankind -- as we look into our own motives, we see attitudes that are not consistent with the teachings of Jesus.
Some of us pray for peace but are resentful of our neighbors.
Some of us are tangled by attitudes, which deny others healthcare and clean water; some of us are enmeshed with friends who indulge in unwholesome habits.
Some of us are blinded by our own desires.
Some of us have murderous jealousies.
Set us free from all deceit and help us learn how to be your hands and mind in this world. Amen.
Sermon Idea
The 1 Kings story is about Ahab pouting, not getting his way and allowing, maybe expecting, his spouse to fix things by having someone else to do the dirty work of assassination of character and then murder.
Second Samuel 11 is the story of envy and murder of a person while 1 Kings is about land and murder. These "texts of terror" (Phyllis Trible's phrase) reveal human jealousy about things and intimacy; such darkness seems to be inherent in every generation.
Luke 7:36 ff suggests that the judging of others is arrogant. To individuals and to small communities, The Law shows what wrongdoing is (Colossians 2:15-21). Yet, The Law does not give us satisfying relationships and happiness. Struggling with our human relationships and with spiritual contentment makes us feel alive and willing to manifest our experience with Christ.
Contemporary Affirmation (Unison)
We know God, the Creator, by many names;
we believe that God, the Holy One, loves us and all creation.
We know Jesus of Nazareth taught people to love friends and enemies;
we believe Jesus' teachings lead us to satisfaction in living.
We believe the Holy Spirit is moving throughout the global village,
inviting all peoples to live peaceably together;
we experience the Holy Spirit to be motivating us to journey toward
internal contentment and external service for justice.
In community, we are stimulated intellectually to ask questions
about the meaning of life and Mystery.
We are challenged to know ourselves and to relate to God.
We are soothed during the painful parts of life and in good times,
we share our rejoicings! Hurrah! Yippee! Hallelujah!
Offertory Statement (Leader)
We are blessed with the responsibility of sharing God's love and the teachings of Jesus on this street. We reach in and we reach out. This takes skill, knowledge, time, and money. As the basket comes to you, give what you can to keep our lights on, our air conditioner working, and our contributions to missions mailed on time.
Doxology
The Lone, Wild Bird (v. 2, modified), tune: PROSPECT
The ends of earth are in God's hand, The sea's dark deep and far-off land.
And I am yours! I rest in you. Great Spirit, come, and rest in me.
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader)
Giver of Meaning -- we are grateful for work to do that provides for our way in the world. We are glad to be known as people who are generous with encouragement, food, and money.
Thank you for this money and for the beauty of this place. Amen.
Intercessory Prayers (Leader or Readers)
Energy of the Universe -- touch this world again with gardens and relationships, which bring you close to humankind. Create on this planet in every creature the desire to walk with you; disarm the human greed that erupts with owning land and oil. Change our human habits that make us gluttonous for travel and gadgets, for information and technology. Slide into every country and negotiate collaboration; sit at every table and provide determination for peace; let there be light in every home, more than enough food, and nurture for every child. Help us not to be weary with the challenges you give us.
Inspiration for Living -- we see humanity on the pages of the Bible and we are alarmed that malice and warfulness wreak havoc in our own times as in ages before us. Come to this world again so that peace has a chance. Let compassion be greater than greed, neighborliness greater than envy, benevolence greater than vengeance. Empower us with the central themes of Jesus until this world can experiment again with your reign throughout the global village.
Guardian of Life -- thank you for being like a parent to us. We are grateful for the men who have provided the DNA for our lives. Though some of them have abandoned us and mistreated us, we believe they did the best they could. So free us from feelings of being unwanted and unloved. Free us from hurtful memories. Free us to love ourselves and to be glad for the adults who are kind and fair with us. Thank you for our wise internal parents.
Galaxy Thrower -- how can we know you? How can we respond to your invitation to co-creativity? How can we articulate our experience with the Mystery of your voice? We think we are learning; day by day we are experimenting with words and paints, with clay and seeds, with silence and dance. See our endeavors toward performing our faith in your love; see our expressions of awareness of Holy Mystery. See our aches and pains that make us morose and short-tempered; see our disappointments and betrayals that shorten our memories and minimize our hope. Soothe us body and soul, mind and psyche until we overflow with gentleness and joy. Be palpable to those whose bodies struggle against disease; lift them above the pain and give them peaceful healing. Amen.
Benediction (Leader)
Life is a journey to Mystery.
Experiment with multiple names for God;
Explore different ways to respond to the Holy Spirit.
Laugh each day and unbuild the overwhelming towers of the world.
Notice possibilities around each corner;
Make dreams and cultivate a glad heart!
Holy Spirit empowers you and me to live real life --
Peace be yours, deep peace. Amen.
