Words Of Assurance
Happy are the eyes that see God's majesty, and the ears that hear his Word, and the hearts that believe his promises.
Pastoral Prayer
Holy Spirit of God, who at Pentecost descended with power upon Christ's disciples, and sent them out to preach the gospel and to found the Church, inspire us also to sustain what they began. O Most High, mean to us what you meant to them: the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. Enrich our souls with that threefold experience, that you may be to us the Almighty Creator, the Saving Character, and the Indwelling Comforter.
Eternal Spirit, mysterious beyond our understanding, yet shining clearly in all that is excellent and true, we deeply need your help. We are not sufficient unto ourselves. As we did not create ourselves, so we cannot sustain ourselves amid life's disappointments and griefs, strains and anxieties, storms and temptations. Here we would lay aside all pride and humbly acknowledge our urgent need. For light enough to walk by through dark days, for inner strength to carry heavy burdens, undertake courageous deeds, sustain personal sorrow, and render faithful service to our generation, we pray to you, O God. Spirit of the Eternal, make us more than ourselves, because we have you for our ally and reinforcement.
Baptize us with the grace of appreciation. Enlarge our capacities for joy. Forgive us that we miss so many opportunities to be glad and grateful. Open our hearts to happiness in simple things, to mirth that has no bitter springs and no sad aftermath. In the beauty of nature, in human friendship, in family life, in the joys of common tasks and familiar relationships, may we find satisfaction, that we may live not only with integrity but with radiance.
We thank you, Lord, for the heritage which is ours in Christ, and for the great tradition that your Church has handed down to us. Make us worthy of our inheritance. Let us not because of any infidelity or lack of character hurt it by our mishandling. We pray for another Pentecost, another outpouring of your Spirit on your Church.
All this we pray in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
Benediction
You came as disciples to learn, and as believers to worship. Now go forth as apostles to share, and as servants to help; and the blessing of God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit go with you. Amen.
