Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle A
First Lesson: Genesis 21:8-21
Theme: Even If ... God Is Present
Call To Worship
Leader: God is present, lift up your hearts.
People: God is with us.
Leader: God is present, let your soul be still.
People: God is with us.
Leader: Come worship and be glad for God is good.
All: Alleluia, God is with us indeed.
Collect
You have taught us, O God with ample mercy, about the breadth of your compassion. Keep us always aware that there is a greater perspective and understanding than our own. Guide us toward serenity of faith in you, O God. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
All: Sometimes, like Sarah, we succumb to jealousy and demand the extreme.
Leader: Still, you listen, O God.
All: Sometimes, like Abraham, we become caught in the dilemma.
Leader: Still, you lead us, O God.
All: Sometimes, like Hagar when most desperate, we give in to hopelessness.
Leader: Still, you provide, O God.
All: Praise be to God. Amen.
42A Hymns1
"Be [Calm][Still], My Soul" Tune: FINLANDIA
"Lift Up Your [Heads][Hearts]" Tune: WOODLANDS
"Lead Us, Heavenly Father, Lead Us" Tune: DULCE CARMEN
Proper 7
Sunday between June 19 and June 25 inclusive
Second Lesson: Romans 6:1b-11
Theme: In Newness Of Life
Call To Worship
Come and worship God. Hear again the good news about baptism, the outward sign of God's gift of grace. Walk in the newness of life that happens because of baptism. Know again the hope of our oneness as the body of Christ.
Collect
Gracious God, each time we witness a baptism, we remember about our own participation in this sacrament. In your Spirit, we move beyond death. Our lives change. We find life. We know the comfort of union with you, O God. In the name of Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We ask senseless questions sometimes, God. If your grace is so free, then why do we have to worry about sin? We can repeatedly do the wrong, then come to church and ask forgiveness. Remind us, God, that when we sin, we separate ourselves from the best within us, from healthy relationships with others, and from oneness with you. When we are alive to you in Jesus Christ through baptism, every dimension of our life reflects newness of life. Amen.
42A Hymns1
"Not Alone For Mighty Empire" Tune: AUSTRIAN HYMN
"We Would See Jesus, Lo His Star Is Shining" Tune: CUSHMAN
"Make Me A Captive, Lord" Tune: LLANLLYFNI
Proper 7
Sunday between June 19 and June 25 inclusive
Gospel: Matthew 10:24-39
Theme: Net Gain
Call To Worship
"Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it." These difficult words of Jesus invite us to take another look at what we lose and what we find as we live in Jesus' way.
Collect
We praise you, O God, for offering us the hope of new beginnings. What we gain in spirit far overpowers the weight we lose. Thanks be to God. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We want you to consider us worthy, O God, but the idea of letting go of and losing our lives for your sake overwhelms us. It must have overwhelmed those of Jesus' day who sometimes had to surrender their physical lives. We would rather someone else would do it. Lead us, O God, toward a fuller understanding of the transformation of the spirit. In the name of Christ. Amen.
42A Hymns1
"This Is A Day Of New Beginnings" Tune: BEGINNINGS
"God's Eye Is On The Sparrow" Tune: SPARROW
"Awake, My Soul And With The Sun" Tune: MORNING HYMN
