A GOSPEL TREASURY
Poems Based on Lectionary Gospels
Jairus was a proud man,
Not just one in a crowd man.
He had a lot of power.
So he had no need to cower.
Yet, he knelt before the Lord.
For Jairus had a daughter
who filled his heart with laughter.
She was his pride and pleasure,
his only child and treasure,
her love, his golden hoard.
When she came down with sickness
then with unexpected meekness,
Jairus knelt before the Master
and, afraid of this disaster,
asked for help that she might live.
Jesus took her by the hand then
and commanded her to stand. When
she stood up, he said to feed her,
which was now her only need. Were
any gift more great to give?
Jesus never seemed to panic.
No human power nor Satanic
swerved his calm determination
to effect our restoration
to his presence and his way.
It seems, when things look hopeless,
that I always seem to cope less
satisfactorily than ever;
Lord, so grant that I may never
all my love for you betray.
Not just one in a crowd man.
He had a lot of power.
So he had no need to cower.
Yet, he knelt before the Lord.
For Jairus had a daughter
who filled his heart with laughter.
She was his pride and pleasure,
his only child and treasure,
her love, his golden hoard.

which was now her only need. Were
