(THREE RUNNERS ARE WARMING UP)
OFFICIAL: (APPROACHING ONLOOKER) Nice day for it.
ONLOOKER: For what?
OFFICIAL: The race.
ONLOOKER: What race?
OFFICIAL: The human race. Too bad you can't be part of it! (LAUGHING)
ONLOOKER: We all have to run in the race. Some of us don't like to run. Some of us don't run very well. But we run. (OFFICIAL STARTS RACE. RUNNERS RUN IN PLACE) The race is long and hard. We strive to get ahead.
The weak, battered and broken, are left by the wayside. (THE RUNNER IN THE MIDDLE GETS ELBOWED BY THE OTHER TWO RUNNERS AND FALLS. THE OTHER TWO RUNNERS TURN AWAY FROM THE AUDIENCE AND LEAVE THE FIRST RUNNER LYING IN A HEAP) The strong and the swift are the winners.
But, what if things were different? What if we had a helper; a friend to pick us up when we are down? (JESUS COMES TO RUNNER WHO IS LYING ON THE GROUND AND HELPS THE RUNNER UP) Someone to brush us off and to encourage us. (JESUS BRUSHES RUNNER OFF AND TALKS ENCOURAGINGLY TO HIM. OTHER RUNNERS TURN AROUND AND ALL THREE RUNNERS WARM UP FOR THE SECOND RACE) Someone who can help win the race. (RUNNERS START AGAIN. JESUS IS CHEERING FOR RUNNERS) Yes, win! With Jesus, our helper and friend, we can win the race of life. (MIDDLE RUNNER WINS AND ALL FREEZE)
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God (Hebrews 12:1-2).
