Really Living!

Object: a beach ball and a grave marker (stone) possibly made out of cardboard and painted gray with a name and dates on it
Good morning, boys and girls. Let me share with you two things that we do not always think go together, but which I hope will really teach you how close God is to you.
The first thing that I have is a beach ball. How many of you have ever played with a beach ball? (let them answer) What do you think about when you see a beach ball? (let them answer) Swimming, sand, having fun, and going on vacation are some of the things that I think about when I see a beach ball. I had a friend who told me that a beach ball reminded him of really living. He just loved to swim and play and when he was doing both he called it really living.
Now I have a second thing that is a little different. (bring out the grave marker or stone) How many of you know what this is or what it stands for? (let them answer) That's right, it reminds you of a cemetery or graveyard. It could also remind us of death and dying. How many of us are going to die? (let them answer) That's right; all of us are going to die. We don't like to think about dying because we are having so much fun living and we don't want to quit doing what we like so much.
But there is a good reason we have the beach ball and the gravestone together today, because we need to learn something very important. The Bible tells us that we belong to the Lord whether we live or whether we die. It doesn't make any difference to God how we are. It makes a difference to us, we think, but to God it doesn't make any difference, and it would be good if we felt like God. We belong to him when we are really living, out at the beach and having a great time. God is there and he enjoys us while we are swimming and playing in the sand. God made the water and the sand for us to enjoy. But God is also with us when we die and when we are buried in the earth. Not only is God in both places, but he tells us that we belong to him alive or dead. That is wonderful news because God also promises us that even when we die he will make us alive again to enjoy a new world that is even more fun than the one that has beaches and warm water.
So be glad that you belong to God and enjoy him now wherever you are, and also be glad that God will be with you when you die. Only after we die will we find out about the new life that he has made for us to live with him in a new world of love.
