LECTIONARY TALES FOR THE PULPIT
Series III, Cycle A
Aunt Carla is adamant about her celebration of Christmas. It can only be one way. Every detail has to focus on the birth of Jesus. No beautiful photos of deer grazing in the woods. Snow--covered valleys or cabins do nothing for her; it's not unusual to have six feet of snow on the ground by Christmas where she lives. She will pass up the cards with Santa, reindeer, and elves all happily engaging in the business of gift--giving. She has enough trouble buying, buying, buying. She doesn't want to be reminded that it's an expensive holiday. Instead she focuses on cards that show the true meaning of Christmas: ones with a nativity scene on it perhaps. A baby in a manger. Something that reminds her of what the first Christmas must have been like. Ornaments and gifts reflect Christmas and the true meaning of Christmas for her: the birth of Jesus.
Aunt Carla's home reflects the holiday: chrismons adorn her tree; candles illuminate a nativity scene on the mantel and cards include gifts of sponsorship to charities and schools. Aunt Carla's life, for that matter, reflects the true meaning of Christmas as she takes in those who need help. Every Christmas has another group of people at her home: friends, family, and others who don't have a place to go. Her whole life has been directed toward others: helping, teaching, and sharing. Aunt Carla knows the true meaning of Christmas.
