Reformation Day
Worship
Lectionary Worship Workbook
Series III, Cycle A
Object:
Choral Music
"The House Of The Lord" -- Bradley Ellingboe (Neil A. Kjos Music)
"Psalm 46" -- John Ferguson (Augsburg Fortress)
"We All Believe In One True God" -- Melchoir Vulpius (Concordia)
Service Notes
A Choral Service using the great hymns of the Reformation as well as its historical prayers may be most appropriate and delightful. Psalm 46 may be sung to "Canticle 6," LBW. An alternate harmonization is provided in the Appendix (appendix is in printed book).
A second option would be a Chorale Service using the model from this year's Pentecost service. This model of mixing old and new emphasizes the Reformation dictum, ecclesia semper reformanda: the church continually being called to renewal, reform, faithfulness, and new life.
Rather than using a full Eucharistic Prayer on this day, chant the Words of Institution, as it was done in years of old (SBH Altar Book). (Sanctus will follow the Verba.)
If Confirmation (Affirmation of Baptism) occurs on this day have a passage of scripture chosen by the confirmand's baptismal sponsors proclaimed as each young adult is called forward.
This Sunday may also be celebrated as Proper 25.
