Several photographs.
Have you ever taken a picture of someone or something? Why do we take pictures, what good are they? (Children respond.) Photographs help us remember special times, places, and people. Here are some of my favorite photographs. (Share pictures with the children and personalize the story to fit your photos.) These are my five sisters. This picture helps me remember the first time we all went on vacation together. We went to the beach and had an awesome time with one another. This is my dog, Eli. This photograph reminds me of the first time Eli got a bath. What a mess! This last picture is of my grandparents. It helps me remember all the special times I had with them when I was growing up. Photographs are like treasures. We can look at a picture and remember all about something special that happened in our lives.
Communion at church is kind of like that. (Display the elements, if appropriate.) We eat the bread and drink the juice to help us remember the very special things that Jesus Christ did for us. Can you remember what Jesus did to forgive our sin? (Children respond.) Jesus died on the cross for our sin. I know that is difficult to understand. The grown-ups don't understand it all either, but we believe it.
The bread helps us remember Jesus' body which was hung on the cross and the juice reminds us of his blood. The service allows us to remember that Jesus did what he did because he loved us and he wanted us to have a better life now and a special life with God after we die.
Communion can be hard to understand, but remember that, just like a picture, communion is a special time that helps us remember everything Jesus did for us.
Be good to one another this week. God bless you.
