Peter: Why do I have to say, "Ma'am"? Why should I respect older people? Mom is always saying, "Remember to say, 'Please' and, 'Thank you,' and always say, 'Yes, sir,' or, 'No, sir.' (Mocks his mother) 'Don't run! You will run into someone.' " Well, who cares if I'm polite? I don't like being polite.
Pastor: What's going on, Peter?
Peter: Oh, I just got a spanking for not respecting my grandmother!
Pastor: Oh, Peter! (In dismay) What did you do?
Peter: I didn't say, "Yes, Ma'am," and forgot to say, "No, thank you"Ê... and on top of all that, I ran her over in church this morning.
Pastor: Peter, you didn't really run over her, did you?
Peter: No, I just sort of ... uh ... knocked her down.
Pastor: Well, good grief! Didn't you listen in Sunday school this morning?
Peter: Sure! I sang, and played with playdough, and I colored, and even said the memory verse!
Pastor: No, I mean, didn't you listen to the story?
Peter: You mean there was a story?
Pastor: Yes, there was a story!
Peter: Hmpf ... Well, I didn't hear one!
Pastor: I can tell, or you wouldn't have gotten into trouble. It told how we should respect our elders.
Peter: Oh, you mean the preachers of the church.
Pastor: It means all older people, not just the preachers past fifty. Don't you know the golden rule? "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
Peter: You mean, if I respect older people, they will respect me, too?
Pastor: Sure they will.
Peter: Wow! I'll try it. Maybe next time I won't get into trouble, as long as I remember the golden rule.
Pastor: Just remember to treat everyone the way you want to be treated. Would you want someone to run over you the way you ran over your poor grandmother?
Peter: No, I guess not. (Pauses) How about if we run over to my house for cookies?
Pastor: After all that, Peter, you still want to run?
Peter: Oh, yeah ... how about if we walk over to my house?
Pastor: That's better! I'd love some cookies!
