The Sermon:
Do you like popcorn, potato chips, peanuts, or french fries? What is one thing all these have that makes them good?
*It's salt. Jesus said something about salt in Matthew 5:13a, "You are the salt of the earth...."
In those days, there were no freezers or refrigerators. Salt was used to preserve food, keeping it from getting rotten. Maybe Jesus meant that God's people keep the world from getting completely rotten. God's people have influence in the world for goodness.
Salt has flavor. Popcorn, potato chips, peanuts, and french fries all taste flat or have poor flavor without salt. Maybe Jesus meant that God's people add flavor to the world. Life without Jesus is not worth living. Being a Christian, knowing Jesus as our Lord and Savior, is fun, interesting, and filled with joy.
Salt is used to melt ice. Sometimes we say someone who doesn't know how to love or care for others has a cold heart or coldness in their life. Maybe Jesus meant that God's people, with their good influence, can melt the cold hearts of people who don't know how to love or enjoy life.
Maybe Jesus meant all of these things. His people preserve the world from getting rotten with sin, add flavor to life, and melt the coldness of those without love, bringing warmth and caring into lives.
Sometimes we hear someone say, "They are the salt of the earth." Even if you are young, you can do this by living and doing as Jesus taught.
