Reader B:
Introit
(As the introit is being sung, Readers A and B come forward and stand by the Advent wreath until the music is finished.)
Litany
Reader A:
Please turn to the Advent litany in your bulletins.
(Pause as they do so.)
If we keep our minds steadfast and trust in God,
we will be kept in perfect peace.
God's light came to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the path of peace.
Scripture
Reader B:
Listen to this Lukan narrative of John the Baptist:
Reader A:
In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar -- when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene -- during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the desert. He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. As is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:
"A voice of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. And all mankind will see God's salvation.' "
Lighting Of The First And Second Advent Candles
Reader B:
On this second Sunday in Advent, along with the candle of hope, we light the candle of peace. We find peace through a comforting and tender God.
(While Reader B is reading, Reader A uses the small candle at the back of the wreath to take the light from the altar candle and transfer it to the front candle and then the side purple candle. Extinguish the small candle and return it to the back of the wreath.)
Prayer
Reader B:
Let us pray:
Almighty God, as we look forward to your coming, help us to prepare the right way; making our crooked paths straight, filling our low valleys, and bringing down our high mountains. By doing so, we discover your deep, abiding peace. Amen.
Introit
(As the introit is being sung again, the readers may be seated.)
