Second Sunday In Advent
For Malachi 3:1-4
(Distribute this sheet to the readers.)
Date:
Reader A:
Reader B:
Introit
(As the introit is being sung, Readers A and B come forward and stand by the Advent wreath until the music is finished.)
Litany
Reader A:
Please turn to the Advent litany in your bulletins.
(Pause as they do so.)
If we keep our minds steadfast and trust in God,
we will be kept in perfect peace.
God's light came to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the path of peace.
Scripture
Reader B:
Listen to these words of Malachi as he promises peace through the coming of the Lord:
Reader A:
"See, I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come," says the LORD Almighty.
But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner's fire or a launderer's soap. He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then the LORD will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness, and the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will be acceptable to the LORD, as in days gone by, as in former years.
Lighting Of The First And Second Advent Candles
Reader B:
On this second Sunday in Advent, along with the candle of hope, we light the candle of peace. We find peace through a comforting and tender God.
(While Reader B is reading, Reader A uses the small candle at the back of the wreath to take the light from the altar candle and transfer it to the front candle and then the side purple candle. Extinguish the small candle and return it to the back of the wreath.)
Prayer
Reader B:
Let us pray:
Almighty God, we look forward to your coming. For you will bring peace in this struggling world. Help us to begin this peace by keeping our minds on you. Amen.
Introit
(As the introit is being sung again, the readers may be seated.)
