Object:
A wireless microphone. If one is not available, a walkie-talkie will work. A battery, like the one used in your device.
Purpose: To understand the importance of regular worship.
Material: A wireless microphone. If one is not available, a walkie-talkie will work. A battery, like the one used in your device.
Lesson: Today I want to show you something that we use every Sunday and that is very important to what we do.* This is called a wireless mike. When a person speaks into the little microphone here, the sound is sent out this wire and in a back room of the church there is a receiver that sends the sound through an amplifier and then out to the speakers so that people can hear what is said. I'd like you to try it. Tell me your name .... (Let each child use the mike.)
(Note: If you have to use the walkie-talkie, change the above. You might send one child to the back of the room to receive the sound in the second walkie-talkie set.)
Now, what makes this work is that there is a little battery inside. Without the power of a battery like this (show), nothing would happen. But the battery itself needs to be recharged or replaced so that it can work. If it simply gives of its power, it will soon be no good.
One of the reasons why we say that people should come to church regularly is to receive new power for living. It is like getting our spiritual battery recharged or replaced so that
we can take what we receive here and go out and share it with others.
Here we remember that God loves us and therefore, we can go out and love others. Here we learn about forgiveness so that we can go out and forgive others. Here we learn about all the good things God has done for us so we can go out and do good things for others. We receive so that we can give, like this wireless mike. Its purpose is to be a sender for the good of others. I hope you will learn to be like that, too.
Possible Times To Use This Illustration In The Home:
• When you have been to a worship service where a wireless microphone was used.
• Any time when you need to replace or recharge a battery.
• When your child questions why he or she has to go to church every Sunday.
• When you have been to a sports event where a referee has used a wireless mike.
• When your child is unwilling to share.
(Note: This concept of needing to be recharged can also be used to help a young child understand why getting a good night's rest is so important. Sleep is our way of recharging the body.)
*Adapting Note: If this lesson is used at home, you may use a flashlight. Simply show your child the battery that powers the unit.
Scriptural Background: ''Come unto me, all who labor and are heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; ... and you will find rest for your souls'' (Matthew 11:28, 29).
