A Time To Plant

There are some words in the English language that are just plain fun to say and hear. These words roll off our tongues and tickle our ears. Our lesson this morning concerns one of these words. The word is "serendipity."
Isn't that a neat word? Serendipity. Say it with me, "serendipity." A serendipity is something really special that you find when you didn't even know you were looking for it. Sound confusing? It's not. Suppose you went into the attic to find an old game that you had packed away. While you were hunting for the game, you uncovered a baseball card that belonged to your dad when he was a boy. And not just any card, but one that was worth a lot of money. That would be a serendipity: something really special that you found when you were actually looking for something else.
Or imagine you were going on a hiking trip with your scout troop to learn about different kinds of trees and plants. Along your hike, you saw a beautiful deer, playful squirrels, and even an eagle. They would be serendipities.
Let's say you were on your way to the beach. You were so excited and couldn't wait to get there but you just hated the long drive. Even though you were in a hurry to get to the beach, your family stopped along the way to eat dinner and spend the night. There in the hotel you met a wonderful man who told funny stories and made you laugh. He became your friend. You guessed it. He was a serendipity.
We can't go looking for a serendipity, because when we look for it, it's never there. It is something we stumble onto quite by accident when we're looking for something else. Some people never come across serendipities. Not because they aren't there, but because some people are too busy, or hard-headed, or stubborn to notice them. Suppose when you were looking for your game in the attic, you threw the baseball card away without looking at it, or when you went on the hike, you didn't even notice the deer, squirrels, and eagle. What if you had not taken time to make friends with the funny man in the hotel? Look what you would have missed by not taking time to appreciate the serendipities around you.
God has created a big world for us to enjoy. We hurry along our way missing so much around us. We miss the serendipities because we won't take the time to appreciate them.
Do what you have to do, but don't get so busy that you don't have time to enjoy the special things along the way. God bless you.
