SEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY
Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids -- Series C
First Lesson: Genesis 45:3-11, 21-28
Theme: Forgiving others
Call to Worship
Pastor:
Even when our nation is at peace, we experience the pains of a fractured society.
People:
We hurt ourselves, because we are not willing to forgive one another.
Pastor:
When Joseph was mistreated by his brothers, he felt God had a hand in it.
People:
We are too willing to leave God out of the picture when we feel abused. May God help us to be forgiving persons.
Collect
Most heavenly Father, who has created all members of the human race to be brothers and sisters: Show us how to turn unbrotherly crimes into strong bonds of fellowship through Christ our Lord, whose forgiveness turned man's sin at Calvary into our redemption for eternity. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
Lord, we bring to you our broken society. Pride, prejudice, greed, and fear have caused us to deny our family ties with one another. Even though we pray for peace and brotherhood, we are not willing to pay the price of forgiveness. Forgive us for creating a world orphanage of unwanted brothers. In the midst of our famine of love, may we be capable of forgiveness that will bring a new society of brothers and sisters. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Hymns
"Are Ye Able?"
"At Length There Dawns the Glorious Day"
"God, the Omnipotent"
"Hope of the World"
"Lift Up Our Hearts, O King of Kings"
"O Brother Man, Fold to Thy Heart"
No. 44 - SEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY
Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 15:35-38a, 42-50
Theme: The resurrection of the body
Call to Worship
Pastor:
The Christian hope assures us of a personal resurrection.
People:
We need that assurance to answer our questions about life after death.
Pastor:
We do not know everything about our resurrection, but we have been promised that just as we have a physical body, we shall also have a spiritual body.
People:
Praise God for his personal interest in us, even after death!
Collect
Almighty God, you are so full of love and life! You have breathed life into our physical bodies, and we live. We ask you now to breathe life into our spiritual bodies, that we may become heirs of your kingdom which flesh and blood cannot inherit. We pray through Christ, our lifegiving Spirit. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
Dear God, we have done so well at being like the first Adam with all our sin. We confess our sinning has hindered our becoming like the second Adam, Jesus Christ, who is the life-giving Spirit. We pray for your grace to cover our sins with forgiveness that we may share in the likeness of Christ. Strengthen us by your Spirit to be more responsive to Christ's influence in our living, than to the sinful nature within us. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
Hymns
"All the Way My Savior Leads Me"
"My Hope Is Built"
"Now the Green Blade Riseth"
"O For a Heart to Praise My God"
No. 45 - SEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY
Gospel:
Luke 6:27-38
Theme: Love your enemies
Call to Worship
Pastor:
What blessings we receive from our friendships!
People:
We love our friends, and thank God for the happiness they give us.
Pastor:
God appreciates our thankfulness, but he is more interested in our making friends of our enemies.
People:
We have a difficult time loving those who mistreat us, but we know that is what God wants us to do. May God help us.
Collect
O Lord our God, who is merciful to the ungrateful and kind to the selfish: Help us to follow your example by loving those who are unloving toward us, that we may identify ourselves as your children. We pray through Christ, who loved us even in our sin. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
Our Father, we need friends, and you have given them to us. But many of them we have turned into enemies, not because we have wanted to, but because of human nature, personality conflicts, and differences of opinion. Forgive us for not overcoming that which makes enemies out of friends. Forgive us for our failure to make friends out of our enemies. Grant us the love to be merciful, as you have been with us. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Hymns
"At Length There Dawns the Glorious Day"
"Lord, I Want to Be a Christian"
"Lord, Whose Love Through Humble Service"
"O Thou Who Art the Shepherd"
