Call to Worship (based on Psalm 119)
Leader: Teach me, O God, the way of your statutes, and I will observe it to the end.
People: Give us understanding, that we may keep your law and observe it with all our hearts.
Leader: Lead us in the path of your commandments, for we delight in it.
People: We have longed for your precepts.
Leader: We come to worship and praise our God.
Call to Confession
Paul says, "If you think that you are wise in this age, you should become fools so that you may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolish with God." Let us admit our foolishness and ask for forgiveness from our wise God.
Prayer of Confession
Merciful God, we certainly want people to think that we're special. We want them to think we are wise or clever, just a notch above the "madding crowd." Why do we waste so much energy on what other people think? We know that what is important is what you think. And you already know our shortcomings and our foibles - and you love us, anyway. You know what gifts we have and what we are capable of, and you urge us forward. You don't make fun of us when we're down, or laugh at our awkwardness. You simply guide us in moving forward again. Paul reminds us that we belong to Christ, and that Christ belongs to you. Forgive us, God, and continue to guide us through our own foolishness. Amen.
Assurance of Forgiveness
The church's one foundation is Jesus Christ, her Lord. No one can lay any foundation other than the one God has laid. Christ is our foundation, also, amidst toil and tribulation and tumult; we wait the consummation that only Christ can give. We know that in Christ we are forgiven. Amen.
Scripture Readings
Leviticus 19:1--2 (Add verses 3--4), 9--18: We don't read Leviticus very often in church, but this is a very good passage to read, having the congregation reply, "I am the Lord your God." It can be done with two readers or a choral speaking choir divided in half.
Reader 1: The Lord said to Moses, saying:
Reader 2: Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them: You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy.
Reader 1: You shall each revere your mother and father, and you shall keep my sabbaths:
Congregation: I am the Lord your God.
Reader 2: Do not turn to idols or make case images for yourselves:
Congregation: I am the Lord your God.
Reader 1: When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very edges of your field, or gather the gleanings of your harvest.
Reader 2: You shall not strip your vineyard bare, or gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the alien:
Congregation: I am the Lord your God.
Reader 1: You shall not steal; you shall not deal falsely; and you shall not lie to one another.
Reader 2: And you shall not swear falsely by my name, profaning the name of your God:
Congregation: I am the Lord your God.
Reader 1: You shall not defraud your neighbor; you shall not steal; and you shall not keep for yourself the wages of a laborer until morning.
Reader 2: You shall not revile the deaf or put a stumbling block before the blind; you shall fear your God:
Congregation: I am the Lord your God.
Reader 1: You shall not render an unjust judgment; you shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great: with justice you shall judge your neighbor.
Reader 2: You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not profit by the blood of your neighbor:
Congregation: I am the Lord your God.
Reader 1: You shall not hate in your heart anyone of your kin; you shall reprove your neighbor, or you will incur guilt yourself.
Reader 2: You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against any of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself:
Congregation: I am the Lord your God.
Matthew 5:38--48: Continuing on in Jesus' teaching on the mount, this familiar passage could be done well with a small choral speaking choir of five people. If they are strong readers they may be spread out across the front of the sanctuary; otherwise, a small semicircle in the center would work well.
Voice 1: You have heard that it was said, "An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth."
Voice 2: But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer.
Voice 3: But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also;
Voice 4: And if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well;
Voice 5: And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile.
All Voices: (Take one step forward in unison) Give to everyone who begs from you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you.
Voice 1: You have heard that it was said, "You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy."
Voice 2: But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
Voice 3: So that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous.
Voice 4: For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have: Do not even the tax collectors do the same?
Voice 5: And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?
All Voices: (Take one forward in unison) Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Call to Offering
Jesus says, "Give to everyone who begs from you. Do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you. Love your enemies. Pray for those who persecute you." As we bring our morning offering, let us remember all those we help with our generosity. Let us step out of our comfort zones, and give to more than only brothers and sisters we know. The ushers will now wait upon us.
Prayer of Dedication
Gracious God, Jesus challenges us to perfection. May our gifts this morning take us one step further toward the perfect world for which we all long. May our gifts help those who are hungry, war--torn, homeless, and hopeless. May our gifts go to those who are different than us, and unsure in their world. May we truly begin to make a difference in our world. With Jesus' love. Amen.
Benediction
Leader: How firm a foundation, you saints of God, is laid for your faith in God's excellent word.
People: God tells us not to fear, that we will be strengthened, and can stand tall in God's love.
Leader: Fear not, God is with us, we will not be dismayed.
People: God goes with us through trial and tribulation. We go filled with the promise of God's steadfastness and companionship.
Leader: Go in love, go in joy, go in peace - filled with the confidence that God is here!
