Slowly But Surely

Object:
A large paintbrush suitable for house painting, a small artist's paintbrush, a completed painting, paints, and a blank canvas.
Message: I thought we would do some painting today. I brought along a lot of supplies that we will be needing. Now here is a painting that has already been completed. Isn't it beautiful? The artist did such a great job on the detail and the blending of colors. It probably took a lot of time for that to be completed.
Our problem is that we don't have very much time here. In fact, we have only a couple more minutes before this part of our service is over and we have to move on to something else. So rather than using this little brush and take such a long time, I thought I would use this large brush and with probably a few strokes of the brush we can have this painting finished up. What do you think, will that work?
No, it won't. The large brush would be okay for the background and putting the first coat of paint on the canvas, but the details can only be painted as we work slowly and carefully to complete the painting. That is also the way God does most of His work in our lives.
If you are like me, you would like God to get His work done quickly in your life. That is a lot like me using this big brush just to move things along. However, the kind of work Jesus does in our hearts requires the small brush instead. He is teaching us to be patient, to love other people, to learn to hear and trust His Word every day. Those things do not come quickly. Jesus works little by little, step by step, to bring us to trust and follow Him as Lord in our lives.
